I have never read the novel that this was based on, so I don't know how faithful it is in regards to the story.The story in the movie is good, interesting and although not a fast paced movie, the pace fits the story. This version seems a little darker than the drama series The Painter of the Wind.
The actors were mostly ok. Shin Yun Bok played by Kim Gyu Ri, was really well done. She managed to convey all the conflicting emotions of her character quite well. You could see within her the joy she had for painting, the pain and guilt she carried with her from her family, and the odd mixture of innocence and experience.
The other actors did well with their characters, but due to the limitations of time, most of the other characters were pretty flat.
I really disliked the portrayal of Kim Hong-Do, her mentor. Kim Nam-Gil had no subtlety in his portrayal. He went from nothing to all, out of no where (Sorry, I can't explain that more without spoilers). Park Shin Yang did a much better job with this role in the drama series The Painter of the Wind.
The music went very well with the movie, it swirled in the background like a brush on canvas.
I would also note that this movie is quite sexually explicit, and definitely not for younger viewers, though I thought that most of the sex scenes were relevant to the plot, so not completely gratuitous.
Overall, if you want to see this story I think I would recommend The Painter of the Wind as a better choice. The series is a piece of artwork in itself, with sweeping cinematography, breathtaking music, and outstanding works of art. The characters are richer and fuller, and the story is all encompassing and not quite as dark. However if you don't have time to commit to the drama and just want a quick movie, this is fine.

The story line isn't exactly unique but I loved it. This was such a good love story. Didn't move me to tears but the actors chemistry was so great that I believed I was watching someones real life story instead of a movie.
What I also love is that there wasn't much talking between the two leads but you could just see and sense the love. Which is why I scored acting so high. Their eye gazes. certain movements and gestures where more than enough, more than words could say I guess.
Only think that I can complain about is that I feel like some things were left unanswered, not sure if that's just me though. Things moved fast and some things I was confused about why a certain situation happened but it's a movie and i don't expect it explain every single thing.
I'm glad I stumbled upon this, It's a mature love story and it's a lot different than other dramas/movies I usually watch.

(My review may not be 100% accurate due to the fact that I've already seen the drama version which may change my view point fore which I may be prejudiced)
Reviewing this movie is rather difficult, partly because I've already seen the drama (Painter of the Wind), which makes it hard to top. Honestly, by no means was the movie better than the drama, that might be because I watched the drama first, however those are my honest thoughts. The plot in the movie is so different to the drama that it made me confused. The plot was, in my opinion, hard to follow but eventually you'd get that ahah moment. (Please note that this is also due to the fact that in these historical dramas I find it hard to tell the older men apart, I was never really sure whether it was the teacher or the father, and still don't know). However good this movie is, I feel it is lacking, not in acting or how it was filmed, but the story was incomplete. I felt that way too little important things were left unexplained, that is the troublesome thing about making a movie, so much to tell but so little time. And by the way, although it doesn't disturb me too much, the movie was rather explicit much more than I'd like.
Disregarding all that I've said, I recommend this movie to you, whether you've already seen the drama or not, it is worth the watch.

I watched this movie with so much expectation from Kim Nam Gil's acting and yes he did not disappoint. Though its a bit hard seeing him die in almost all his projects! ?I was surprised that I liked this movie, the storyline may be a bit of cliche but how it unfolds and how it ended made it unique for me. The nudity maybe a bit excessive but I found it essential to the story. The love scene between the two leads was tastefully done and I cant help but feel how much they loved each other. No long dialouges needed, just a touch and a look conveys it all. Read many negative reviews but I think one just needs to let the movie grow on you. Also, Ive read that this movie ranked 8th in movie viewership in Korea for 2008, thats not bad considering how busy their movie industry is. Cant wait to check out the series based on the same book!
