I didn't expected to like 'Why R U?' -even tho, I have some complaints ?-

Ok, I finally got to see 'Why R U?', tbh I just saw it for Saint since I'm following his work after LBC.

The first thing is that it really bored me in the first episodes ???? It took me 4 days to finally see chapters 1 and 2. I thought it would be a bad series, but I wanted to end it... was a good choice to stick to it.

In the end, I have to admit it was a series that I liked even more than LBC, so I want to give my own opinion over it:

Because anything is perfect, I want to start with some general flaws:
* The first thing that really bothers me about WRU was the concert... I mean, it was really awful to see them singing trying to make it look like it was music there, it was funny, but still... was that an editing issue?
* This is just my point of view, but, I couldn't understand why SaiFah and Fighter had to fight every single time with Zon and Tutor, I mean, as a child it's somewhat understandable, but as adults, more than that, straight adults... why do they have to do that?... to date, I haven't had met any real couple who started fighting in the way the start but is just a minor point.
* Some camera angles were awful... At first, they were seeing straight to the face, then the camera changes and they are in another position, I'm don't work in Hollywood, but it was something I had a hard time letting slip...
* The inconsistency about Tutor's family wealth... I don't know if I get something wrong, but I understood that Tutor's family was in bankruptcy, then they show his mother who lives in a pretty great house and she buy him the apartment, did they or did they not needed the money?
* The fluffy parts were meant to be for comic relief, I know, but I don't really like those over-the-top personalities, how the people at the bakery acted was just too much for me, I usually fast-forwarded those parts.

Now, let's talk about the characters:
+ Zol and their parents: I want to start with her since she is my less liked character of the regular cast. I totally didn't like Zol's attitude, the way she wasn't straightforward to rejected the guy, or how she pushed his other friend to keep texting such guy so she could forget about him, it was like playing with people... About their parents, they were so random that I don't have any opinion about them, the mother was really cute, tho.
+ HwaHwa: In the beginning, I felt bad for her since I thought she was soo in love with Fighter. Then she lost me when Fighter told her that every single time they fight or have any argument, she goes and talks to his father and her mother. Then I could understand that she is a spoiled brat who thinks that just bc is her, other people need to listen to her. In the end, she supports Tutor and Fight, but, the fact that she acted the way she did with Fighter in their relationship, still bothers me. I think Day was too good for her, but, let's put that in other comments hahaha
+ Minor Couples: I think that only Blue's love story was kinda my taste, I couldn't get to like the others couples.
+ Fighter's dad: I have to congratulate them for showing the first parent who is against the main couple's relationship (the parents from UWMA don't count since it was 30 years ago). I was kinda tired to see families too supportive tbh, it's stupid, but I couldn't relate to such families, is not that they don't exist, but I didn't get excited by them since I saw too many people like them in the series I have seen. In the end, he supports his son's relationship with Tutor, but, it was a fresh of air to see him hahaha
+ Tong (Tor's sister): for the other hand... props to the most real and human sister I have ever seen in this dramas. I know what I said about supportive family just a paragraph ago, but she was a hell of a character... I mean, the actress even showed how she was digesting the news about Tutor, and the advice she gives him was the most relatable I have ever seen, even the one she gave to Fighter. When they say goodbye at the airport, that was too real for me, she was a great character even tho she just appeared in one episode.
+ SaiFahZon: I'm gonna put them together bc I haven't seen their side story. But, the same issue I had with Fight being stubborn against Tutor, I had with those two together... I liked their personalities and I think that they worked pretty well by themselves and together, so they were a good addition.
+ Fighter: Ok ok, don't hate me... I loved the guy, I liked his performance, buuuuut the thing with his attitude -at first- against Tutor was somewhat incoherent for me. Saying that I have to admit that when he cried for Tutor... maaan, he gives his all in that scene alone. I'm gonna talk later about the couple's dynamic, but, when it comes to the character, he was a great asset to the series.
+ Tutor: Finally, the Main Character (at first, I thought it was Zon hahaha), I have to say that Tutor overcomes Pete. The way Saint portrayed Tutor was just amazing. I have to admit that I hated Pete's passiveness sometimes and his soft voice was sometimes unbearable, but, Tutor WOOOW! Props to him. I couldn't help but to like him from the very beginning, the way he was so calm about HwaHwa botters me sometimes, I never understood if he was into her or just saw her as a friend, but I'm so glad that he passed from her. He understood first his feelings and was understanding about Fighter's doubtfulness in the series. I saw a Tutor dealing with real problems, I even feel relate to the sadness he exudes when he got rejected from too many jobs, there was a day when I felt exactly the same. This is one of my fav characters to date. btw, Does Saint have any fetish about ending his series on the beach? hahahahaha

At last, I wanna talk about major points and couples dynamic:
- The settlement was enjoyable, the music was great and the beach scenes were outstanding. I even wanna travel to Thai just for the beaches hahahaha
- The pansexuality of the four main characters, I mean, they def. are not straight, neither gay... maybe Bi, but I go with pansexuals since Fight said that "Tutor was the only person he had feelings for...", I really think that they are pansexuals and that was good to see in a series.
- SaiFahZon Relationship: After the usual hating they two had, I have to admit that they became one of the cutest couples I have ever seen on screen. And it wasn't fluffy, was just cute. They were understanding to each other's feelings, the way SaiFah protected Zon, and how Zon took care of him when he got sick, I totally have to see their side story.
- Tutor/Fight: At first, I thought Tutor was gonna be so passive as Pete but it wasn't the case, the thing I loved the most about this couple was how mature they were, lest just ignore when Fight's dad talked to Tutor. The fact that they were both straights and thought too deeply about their feelings, was gold. Also, I have to admit that they were really committed to the lovely parts, the sex, the kisses, I bet that Zee got hard in some scenes, I mean, how could they not feel anything after all they did? As a couple, they were a great improvement from what I was used to in other dramas, I still love more PuphaTian than FighTor, but after seeing this couple, I don't need AePete anymore hahahaha

Oh! Before I forget... could Saint get a role as top or inter at least? I can see a lot of potential on him about it hahahaha

I don't think is anything left to said... I just have to admit that this was a great series, I def. gonna rewatched a lot of times.

If you get to read to this part, thank you...

Great Chemistry with Not So Great Pacing

Before I dive into the drama, this review is just a personal opinion of mine so before anyone wants to comment such things, yeah I'm not gonna entertain so run along.

When I watch BLs, I mostly watch them for entertainment. I usually watch them after seeing a drama with a really heavy and complex plot so BLs are lighter-hearted and for me to laugh on and fangirl, a bit. It can be a simple, overused, cliche plot but doesn't matter to me as what I pay attention more is on the couples. But this BL, I'm not even sure what the plot is about. It's all over the place. I guess the clown background music playing at the beginning at the first episode already warn me that the BL is gonna be weird in terms of the pacing and editing. I won't dive into those because it's not my biggest concern. Here where lies my biggest problem with the plot.

Way too many couples are introduced in the show and there is an imbalance on all 4 of them. I only paid attention to Fightor and Saizon's story and the other 2 couples, yeah they don't exist. I sound mean but it's the truth. They appeared and disappeared faster than a jet. I'm gonna be honest, I completely forgotten about them until I read the reviews after finishing the show. Not even their names. Sue me. They are not even shown at the last episode during the beach scene. If people fast forward some scenes in the show, they wouldn't have known that the other 2 couples exist in the first place until I tell them. I prefer when BLs only have one or two couple in the show, preferably one for me so that they can slowly develop and let the relationship slowly falls in place. I mean, BL is a short series so why introduce so many at once?

Now, let's move on with the 2 main couples. I'll start with Tutor and Fightor's story. Their story is like reading a BL webtoon. Cliche and cute but hot and sexy at the same time. They have amazing chemistry and Zee's acting impress me a lot. I enjoy seeing the both of them together and with them wearing the animal outfits. They are so cute together. At the same time, I also enjoy seeing them eating their faces out and finally! They did it with CONSENT. BL writers, please follow this! And just to spice it up their story, add in a some melodrama scene and a bit of angst and you're done! So simple. What more could I ever ask for?

Next, Saifah and Zon. Their story crack me up especially Zon thought their love story is based on his sister's BL novel. I even have to rewind and think, wait is this true? Hahaha. However, I wasn't not sucked into their story until halfway due to their lack of screen time. The other two side couples could have been used more on them. That's why I think it's a bit rushed in my opinion. Nonetheless, they make a very cute couple and their moments are hilarious. Pity the fans who are more into them and wish they have more screen time. I will watch their special episodes for sure.

I didn't care for the other stories like Hwahwa, did she even have one? I'm not sure. She is still a great character and thank god she isn't the same stereotypical jealous girl that BLs love to portray. It's ridicuously annoying and it needs to put at stop in BLs.

The show overall? I enjoyed it. It was light and refreshing. It's something you can watch after those heavy plot shows and you just need something to cleanse your palate and a plot for you to laugh on if you're a BL fan. Watch it with your crazy group of friends, grab your pillow and popcorn and squeal all the way. Have fun with this show.

Great Concept, Improper Execution

Coming into Why R U, I didn't know what to expect, but I must have expected something because the show left me a bit disappointed. Before I started watching , I didn't do any research on the storyline or the characters. So, with my limited background knowledge on the series, I expected Saifai and Zon to be the main BL couple. I mean, the first episode began with Zon's "crisis," (you'll know what I mean if you watch the show ;) so I assumed he would be in the main couple. A couple of episodes later, to my disappointment, I realized that Fighter and Tutor were the main BL couple. I only say I was disappointed because Saifai and Zon's relationship was so adorable, and I wish we saw more of them:( I really enjoyed the first half of the show, (until around episode 6 i think) but afterward, the show went downhill for me for three reasons. One, I didn't understand the point of any of the BL couples besides the main two. The stories of the other BL couples fell flat because of a lack of development, so I felt like there was no point of them in the show. And honestly, those other couples just added more confusion to the show. The scenes of the main BL couples were already scrambled enough (as if random scenes were placed into random parts of the episodes). So, randomly adding the scenes of the other BL couples just made the show more of a mess. On the side of the potential straight couples though, I feel that Day and Hwahwa was the only couple that was executed nicely. I know I've rambled :) about my first reason why the second half of Why R U went downhill for me, but my second reason is that I had hoped that Saifai and Zon's story would receive more development, but it really didn't. I thought maybe Why R U was going to stray from the BL norm of only developing the story of the main BL couple and go more in depth with Saifai and Zon's story. Sadly though, only Figher and Tutor's relationship received some developmet. My final reason why I think that the second half of the series wasn't amazing is the main BL couple itself. Now, don't get me wrong. I'm not saying that kissing scenes in BL always take away from the value of the story, but in Fighter and Tutor's case, it did. Though Fighter and Tutor's make out scenes were pretty hot, it seemed like making out was what the couple's story was driven on. Why R U was similar to TharnType in the aspect of make out scenes, but at least in TharnType, the couple's story was developed in a way that there was more to their relationship than sex. However, in Why R U, Fighter and Tutor's relationship seemed too sex-driven, making their relationship quite superficial.

Alright, if you made it this far into my review, I believe that Why R U had a lot of potential that, sadly, was lost due to how disorganized the show was and the lack of meaning in the relationships. In my book, meaning is what truly makes a BL successful, and unfortunately that is something that Why R U didn't have too much of.

When I first started watching this, I absolutely loved this. It was amazing! It still is. However, when the world decided to go down the toilet, so did the drama, kind of. They hadn't finished filming, not entirely, therefore there were many episodes where you didn't see any Zon or Saifah. I felt as if I was robbed of them, as once you get to episode 9, from there on its mostly Fight-Tor, which I love, but I felt it wasn't equal in screen time because of what happened. After episode 9, I was like, "Okay, I like this. Maybe next episode will be an entirely SaiZon episode." But it wasn't. There was one like 4 minute scene, but that was it. I only wish that they could've filmed earlier or something. But all in all I'd say give it a watch. It's sweet and funny.

Didn’t Work for Me

I placed a potential spoiler at the end of this review.

I acknowledge this review will have unpopular opinions. The only reason I watched this series was because Saint Suppapong is in it. I was interested on how well his acting skills developed.

I understand COVID-19 caused havoc for this series, but it was doomed from the start. The story concept is just too weird and the script was a complete mess. It also switched from being a romantic comedy to a heavy drama out of nowhere. I was more interested with the relationship development of Tutor and Fighter than with Zon and Saifah. However, this is due to Zon and Saifah’s link to the bizarre story concept. I think Saint’s acting skills really improved and did a great job with his character. The acting by everyone else is decent. As for Zol, this character was very annoying. There were to many supporting cast members and subplots that went nowhere. However, this probably had to do with the pandemic. There are some editing problems with time continuity, one minute it’s daytime and then it’s night time within the same scene. There is also an overuse of sound effects.

Random Note: This is the first BL series that I almost dropped. I kept watching because I wanted to see how Tutor and Fighter’s relationship would end.

******Potential Spoiler Alert******
Why is Zol writing a BL novel about her brother (Zon) and why are all the other characters ok with this? This makes no sense.

BL almost parodic with a fanfic/shipper point of view that could have been exploited more

This BL romance is set up between guess what...engineering (and communication) students with also a soccer team and a music club in the background...Let's say that it is quite classical within the BL Thai landscape. However the story contains also enough of little twists to make it quite interesting to follow.

I like that the relationships between the guys are already established. We are not in a situation where they meet each other, they have some stormy past between them, which makes it somewhat refreshing. It is also litterally fanfiction becoming real which makes it pretty fun and endearing to follow. I enjoyed the delulu / fangirls / shipper point of view with the BL references. It is clealry a nice plot element but it could have been exploited much more.

The humor is too slapstick for my tatse, sometimes I do not mind it but here it is really heavy with some of the sidekick roles. Pacing-wise, they ended each episode on a cliffhanger or some hot scenes, making the show pretty bingeable. Honestly, the chemistry was kind of there but not for everyone and it was difficult to understand how quick the two main couples went from hate to attraction. Eventhough the switch from hate to love was too fast to be believable, with some suspension of disbelief, it gets better.

Acting-wise, I really enjoyed to find back Saint and Zee in a new pairing, very spicy. Their hot scenes are really well done with palpable tension. Tommy and Jimmy were doing an okay job but the light was really shining more on the other pairing than on them. I also appreciated to see some familiar faces among the secondary cast but I had also some real trouble enjoying the sides couples as the script felt very parodic for most of them.

Production-wise, it felt really low budget. It is too bad that the animation parts felt really cheap and poorly animated with drawing that are pretty standard and bland. It really does not bring a lot to the series...In addition to the less than stellar animation, the editing of the scenes and the transitions are also pretty bad, it felt super choppy in terms of continuity. The OST was really forgettable and a bit all over the place.

I would recommend this to people looking for a classical BL in a university set up with fanfiction / shipper reference and parodic/comical elements. It is pretty spicy with a lot of eye candy as well which makes its flaws in writing and in production a bit more forgivable I suppose.

Whast happened to the main character??

I have to say that I did indeed enjoy this series a lot, but something was bothering me a little and that was the fact that Tutor and Fight had more screen time than Zon, the main character.
I know that Tutor and Fight are also the main characters but the story is about Zon's life turning into a BL and him falling for Saifah like in his sister's novel but we mostly see the relationship between the other couple. I'm not saying that I didn't like their couple, I actually liked them more than Saifah and Zon but still! The main couple should have had more screen time since the story is about them.
I can't complain too much because like I said, I did enjoy it so I'll just keep some of my thoughts to myself.

Devolves Into What It Sought To Parody...

Started off strong with some fun meta humour, but was let down when it tried to take a more serious turn. The lack of development from the side couples (and Saifah/Zon, who are initially introduced as though they would be the main pairing) left me uninterested in their scenes by the time the second half of the series rolled around. I was much more interested in Tutor/Fighter, who had some nice development from enemies to lovers, but fell prey to the "homophobic parent" plotline which subsequently just kind of went nowhere? All was resolved with a random phone call that was utterly inconsistent with the previous characterisations.

Acting was, as is typical in this type of BL, somewhat heavy-handed but this worked with the meta humour at the outset. Some more serious acting chops showcased by Zee in the second half, but only ever in scenes where he's sobbing uncontrollably.

Music was catchy, but ultimate forgotable amidst the sea of poppy-BL theme songs.

Overall it was a fun watch, but it went from self-aware and tongue in cheek to tropey and shallow in the exact way that the earlier episodes made fun of.

he's been in denial so long that, now that he's out of denial and he don't know how to act

That was fighter most of the time. The average of this for me was 8.9 stars out of 10 stars. This was a banger. That's my spicy take. I just loved it. The ending was a little meh, and I feel like they could have done more with it. I started this like 5 days ago, and in the middle, I was like, Damn, these mofos are mad annoying, and then I watched something else. So yeah, I titled my Close Friends Highlights: Why r u? because that's the name of the show, duh. Okay.

I started it, and I was like, OMG, look at all of these familiar actors, and I love them. Zon's Star Wars room was cute, and I really liked the room designs. I liked them a lot; they were cute. There was a black person who was the representation I needed as a black person.

Sai and Zon's height difference was all I needed in life. Oh my god, they were just so cute. I love them. Then Mew and Gulf were there, and I was like, What the hell? That doesn't make any sense. I left that tharntype life behind me, bro.

I love fighter and tutor. They were annoying but had their cute moments. Then back to Sai and Zon with their guitars being all cute and singing together. Zon was the only one not in Delulu Land for a while. Then we saw Max and Nat. Dew and Blue: I don't know why Dew was beating up Blue. Tutor being hit on by the people at the restaurant, bro, as a fellow minimum wager, smack him, bro. Don't let him do that too you.

Glad hwahhwah, or whatever her name was, found someone to love her. Day really loved her, and I like how she faded out after Fighter realized his feelings for Tutor. Tutor was in so much denial that he was the damn river in Eypgyt.

I started loving Sai and Zon so much more because they were just so cute, and I loved them so much. They knew how to get each other with all their teasing, and that was just so cute.

Fight and tutor started their sex epidoes; good for them, to be honest. They were so bangers. Love them. Their little cute honey moon phase was fun, and I love them.

Daddy ruined that honeymoon phase so fast—literally, fuck fighters, dad, ugly bitch. They should have burned his ass at the stake. One more hour by Tame Impala was Fighter and Tutor's song. He did so much for Fighter, and his family and Fighter didn't even know, bro. He did so much.

Then we had their interesting scene, and I was like, No way, bro is definitely going to jail. What was the fighter even doing, bro? Like, what was his plan after that? He was begging for forgiveness because he messed up, bro. They were cute. I don't really have a lot to say about this show despite it being 13 episodes, not a whole lot happened. It was repeating a lot, but meh. Routine is good most of the time.

This was cute. I liked this show; it was kind of all over the place. It was so all over the place that it wasn't even funny. I love the cast; good acting. Thats it. I would recommend it, sort of. Very all over the place and the same shit was happening for all 13 episodes. Okay bye!

I only came into this series because I wanted to watch Saint. With that in mind, it took me a long time to really care about Zon and Saifah, because they just didn't interest me when all I wanted to watch was Fight and Tor. I eventually got to where I enjoyed both couples equally, but it wasn't until the last couple of episodes or so.

I didn't care about the side couples at all. In fact, I skipped a lot of it. I know Covid greatly affected the filming schedule, so a lot of scenes were missing. But that worked out for the better in my opinion because it meant more time was spent on the main couples of the show.

Will probably only watch Tor and Fight scenes when it comes to a rewatch. I just really loved their storyline whereas I feel like Zon and Saifah didn't get the meta BL novel storyline I was expecting them to have.

UPDATE 2/8/22
After I watched this the first time, I gave it my nice 8.5 rating and went on my merry way. Except I couldn't quite stop thinking about this show. I found myself rewatching clips of Fight and Tor at least like once a week. I finally decided after only a couple short months I needed to rewatch it again to hopefully get them out of my system. I don't think it worked, because I love them even more now than I did before.

And not even that, but I actually enjoyed Zon and Saifah much more. When I first watched this, it was fresh after finishing LBC and I wanted to see more of Saint, so I found myself wishing for Zon and Saifah's scenes to end so I could get to the parts I wanted. But this time, I went into it wanting to enjoy the whole experience, and that's exactly what happened. This show may be lacking in some areas due to complications with Covid, but honestly I love it to pieces, and it just brought a goofy smile to my face every time Fight and Tor were together.

As much as I love 1000 stars and I want that to remain my favorite BL because it introduced me to this whole new world of shows, I think it's safe to say that it has moved into second place, with WHY R U being my absolute favorite for now.

Boring Story

The story was kind of boring, nothing really exciting or fun happened, i personally only like the couple zon and saifah. fight really pissed me of at the beginning tbh. i would not watch it again, i couldnt wait till the episode finished , i really forced myself through the series. at first i liked it but it became more boring throughout the series. i really liked the visuals of the actors and the acting in general was also very good. in the end i have to say, i enjoyed the couple zon and saifah, their scenes were the best, i liked their visuals and acting, but the story was kind of boring and not really to my liking, the other couple with fight got more screen time and i didn’t like them. i wished zon and saifah would get more screen time.

Fighter/Tutor are awesome

This is a hard series to rate as a whole. Admittedly, the bad was pretty bad. But the good (Fighter/Tutor) was so great it brought the overall rating up. But if you find yourself struggling with it, I recommend just watching the Fighter/Tutor storyline. That's what I do when re-watching, and it's a complete story that is great on its own.

Seriously, I loved Fighter/Tutor so much. I adored both characters individually, and adored them as a couple. My only complaint would be that the ending was rushed. They squished what should've been AT LEAST an episode (I'd argue two or three) into barely ten minutes. Some things shouldn't have worked out that quickly, and even the bits that did should've had a lot more emotional fallout. The F/T story had been so good at depicting emotional turmoil and distress in response to tough situations and inner struggle, so it was sad the same level of attention wasn't given to the resolution of those same problems. Seriously, I had whiplash from how quickly all the problems disappeared. I would've loved them to go deeper.

Still, the rest of the story was so great, the rushed ending didn't detract much. And I understand there were time constraints.

But we have to talk about the acting! The acting was fantastic! Particularly Zee. I cannot praise Zee's performance highly enough. He was brilliant.

As for the rest of the show... not my thing. I tried really hard, but I just couldn't enjoy it. The humor wasn't my taste. I cringed so hard in a lot of scenes. Other scenes felt completely irrelevant and like filler. There were way, way too many side plots for my taste. So, as I said, now I just watch the F/T story and skip the rest, and I kind of wish I'd done that from the start. But I know others enjoy the rest, so I think it's worth trying at least.

If I rate only the F/T story, I'd rate it like this:
Story: 9.5
Acting: 10
Music: 8
Re-watch: 10
Overall: 9.5

If I rate everything else on its own, I'd rate it very low. Overall, not so bad. I really do think the F/T story is good enough to bring the overall experience up a lot. But if you struggle with the series as a whole, just watch F/T and ignore the rest.
