But I'm pleasantly surprised by how well written the drama actually is. It follows closely to the manga version more, so it gives me more reason to love it. And I also love the actors. They look just like the characters in the original series I could even recognize their rivals easily. That's quite amazing. And the Yu Qing (Seigaku) boys exactly look like their original counterparts. Except for Qiao Chen, who plays Momo, since I think that he is too handsome to be Momo lol
1. Story (8.5 points)
While I like the story, since it follows anime more than the manga, I saw some fillers in the drama as well. It's not unwatchable, but for those who don't like PoT would think that it's totally silly and unnecessary. I'm actually worried about how the tennis would look like, as PoT is not what you call "normal" tennis, it's more like "fantasy" tennis with all those super weird techniques. But it looks fine enough to me. The CGI is smooth and it's integrated well in the drama, making the techniques believable (somehow). I also love that they include Yan-juice (Inui-juice/Penal-tea) in this drama, which is also a pleasant surprise
2. Acting (9.0 points)
Very on-point. I love that Lu Xia is just... Lu Xia. The actor got the character on point and he plays the calm and arrogant character card very well. The other characters also seem to know the original characters very well, because they act just like the original characters. What surprised me is the one who plays Zhou Zi (Fuji), because that character is very hard to portray, but the actor actually played it very well. I'm impressed
3. Music (10 points)
I love the music. The opening and ending are suitable for the drama
4. Rewatch value (7.5 points)
Because you know who's going to win, so I don't think rewatch is necessary. For people like me who is a die hard fan of this story, I would definitely rewatch them. For casual drama watchers, rewatch would be hard with 40 episodes. I'm someone who watch 178 episodes (and more) of the anime like thousand times, so 40 episodes is nothing to me
Overall, my score is 8.0 points for this drama. The production value is surprisingly also quite good. It's not high budget, but I could see the care the production team put into the drama. If they ever release second season, then I would definitely watch them as well

CAST: The director did so well with the casting, props to them for finding actors/actresses that have similar features to the original characters. Whenever they would introduce a character I would get excited! I would also get excited when the characters did their move! They made some changes to some of the characters but then that just made it unique, in my opinion.
Overall, it was a very satisfying drama and adaptation of Prince of Tennis. One of the better ones in my opinion! Even if you haven't read the manga or seen the anime version of Prince of Tennis, this is still a feel good and inspirational drama to watch. It talks about teamwork, friendship, and passion for what they love.

It also was upsetting to watch these actors try to wrap the grip on their rackets! What a farce! The way one guy was wrapping it would have taken 3 wraps to complete the grip and been awkward as sin to hold!
Now, I can't really attest that in China they 'don't' play tennis in the rain or on wet courts or with a 100 tennis balls lying all about, but in the states, that's not only dangerous, but a sue happy parent's wet dream.
What REALLY annoyed me were the constant and endless flashback montage sequences! My goodness, you could easily cut the show by a third if they eliminated half of them! A lot of time they were just thrown together and even lacked relativity to the current scene.
IF you can suspend you disbelief ... and you don't play a lot of real tennis, then this show might be for you. It'll hurt to watch kids that obviously can't hit a ball over the net being 'super powered' tennis players with magic abilities, but if you can put up with that you'll probably enjoy a good 'kids animated' show brought to life.
Worthy of ONE watch only, no way are you going to want to rewatch this series.

First of all, Im so glad it's over. I think over 25 episode dramas are not for me. I tend to binge watch all dramas in a few days but 40 episodes in 5 is a new record I do not want to repeat.
I've tried to watch long dramas on numerous occasions but got bored and stopped. With this one I was resolved to watch it to the end.
And guess what. It dragged..... Like unbelievably dragged. I expected this with 40 episodes but like this got so bad in the second half. The last episodes where absolutely ridiculous it felt like a whole different drama.
The drama made my hopes go high up by starting off really good with alot of funny scenes eccentric characters and a calm atmosphere. I still stand by my opinion that the actor of liu xia is truly talented. Jiangle was my second fave he was such a sweet sensitive sunshine.
Then in the second half it took a sudden dip.
Liu xia the main character was suddenly pushed into the background and the whole supporting cast seemed to be the main cast now.. like wath? I've never seen that in a drama before only the supporting characters getting less screentime. Then alotttttt of supporting characters where introduced. In the first half too but in the second it became more apparent. All the teams they played against seemed to need that extra attention. There were seriously so many supporting roles that I got overhelmned. I couldn't remember names anymore everyone seemed to have some kind of special ability and some seemed to have some kind of relation with the players of yu quing. Like the screenwriter being... "We need a backstory in the last 10 episodes with some unknown characters that didn't appear until the last minute. NOW."
The last match of the provincial finals was absolutely ridiculous like totally bad. I cannot describe how bad this drama got in the end. Yes of course every character has some special move etc.
But like it got to almost a kind of over cgi kung fu /wuxia level in the end? If you scroll down the cast list I can guarantee you that those are not all actors in the drama.
We also have alot of product placement in the second half wich was a little annoying but bearable.
Of course we also needed a comedic relief duo because they make everything funnier. *Rolls eyes. And of course they made one character conceited and smart mouthy and then other one chubby and hungry. Ohhh how original that is.
The female cast was very small, like only being 5 person big. I found the female reporter and qiao chens love interest kind of unnecessary? But who cares we already have so many unnecessary characters anyways.
The sets where.... Bland. One color palette, reuse 1 set multiple times bland..... The sets looked like those in a 15 sec commercial shoot only that they where used for more than 40 episodes.
The filming was.... Not that great. I didn't get alot of bird view filming even though that would have been very helpful since they were playing tennis. The cameras were also glued way to closely to the character's so that you almost didn't get any good perspective shots. The close ups were overused and almost obnoxious. They used a way too high resolution camera so that you could see every little pimple and every bear stubble.
I think some of the closer supporting cast could have been better chosen. There was not a lot of room for natural character development since the cast was so hugeeeee. I missed the funny scenes with liu xia from the first 15 episodes.
In the end I thought I think I wasted my time watching 40 episodes of this when 20 would have been enough and would have saved me from a very bad continuation.
( I almost forgot lu xias dad. I liked him for the most part he could have gotten more dad son moments. I found them to be very sweet.)
Im probably going to irritate some fans but keep in mind that this is my personal opinion.

Naruto like series!!!!!
This series is lite and good show if you want to casually watch while eating or before going to bed.I would like to explain what I meant by Naruto like series. Here all the players were like Ninjas with their unique Jutsu. Also felt like this series is for kids, i mean they are explaining each and every shot just like in Naruto how they explain the audience about each and every jutsu casted.
There are so many stereotypical characters like if a guy is well built, strong then his main power is to use strength. If a guy is wearing glasses then he is a computer kind of guy, studious. I was like writer can do so much better than this cartoon kinda characters.
One thing I have seen in majority of Chinese drama is bad dubbing. Unnecessary background score. I mean you don't have to give comical music just to let the audience know that it is a funny scene. lol in a sarcastic way
All the players have done a pretty good job, again don't expect anything great out of this series. Its like director is telling perseverance, hard work can win anything like how our teachers used to teach in school .
Now I want to give shout out to the FL who single handedly brought the quality of the series down. The character was soo soo soooo soo weak that she single handedly manage to irritate , annoy the shit out of me. I mean, throughout the all she did was run behind ML. They are just in 10th grade and she is packing lunch, baking cake, knitting for him. I mean there was no connection established b/n them. The writer , director just forced that relation on us. It was super irritating. I mean in one of scenes when Lu Xia's eye starts bleeding then all the players take him to see the doctor, what was she doing there. I mean she is not in the tennis club what the hell was she doing there. She even went to the dinner party after the match. It was meant for the players, i mean what i want to stress here is why force that relation which is not even there. I was literally praying whenever I saw Lu Xia alone that not to make this girl enter the frame. I really couldn't ignore her character because it was such a waste and didn't add anything to the story. I wish she was not there.

Thrilling sports drama, with themes of friendship, love and dreams
The Prince of Tennis offers an engaging mix of youthful energy, heartfelt friendship, and the pursuit of dreams, all woven through the thrilling world of competitive tennis. At its core, the film revolves around young athletes with immense talent, navigating the pressures of the sport, while also dealing with personal emotions like first crushes and the bonds of friendship. The story beautifully captures the challenges of youth — from juggling ambitions to growing relationships, all while maintaining the spirit of sportsmanship. The friendship among the main characters are all heartwarming and realistic, showing how dreams can bring people together and help them grow.
What truly elevates this film is its strong cast. Each actor brings their character to life with precision, portraying the determination, vulnerability, and competitive spirit expected in such a story. However, it is Peng Yu Chang who truly stands out to me. Known for his bubbly, charming personality off-screen, he surprises the audience with a serious and committed portrayal in this film. His performance is a testament to his versatility and growth as an actor. His ability to take on such a focused and driven character in contrast to his real-life persona proves that he is one of the finest actors of his generation.
The production quality is impressive, especially the tennis sequences. The effects and camera work make the audience feel as though they are watching real tennis prodigies in action. Every rally, every shot feels intense, contributing to the excitement of the story. It brings the audience into the game, making them believe in the characters’ genius on the court.
Another key aspect of the film is its soundtrack. The music is vibrant and motivational, resonating deeply with the story’s themes of hard work and chasing dreams. It’s the kind of soundtrack that inspires the audience, making you feel alive and encouraging you to pursue your own passion with the same determination the characters show on the court.
Will I consider rewatching? Yes, it is inspiring. I actually watched it for the 4th time since I’ve know this drama.

Honestly doesnt really feel there is much story going on besides friendship, winning match, achieving dreams. But I was still particularly interested due to the great acting and chemistry between the mates. Started noticing peng yu chang since this one. Still recommending this one to everyone who loves sports drama especially, but I probably wont rewatch it.

The weakest part of the drama was the look. Most of the actors have unusual proportions already - tall, skinny with large heads. Peng Yu Chang, being the one exception to the proportion difficulties, was given horrible hair. But, something really needs to be done about the white faces with either red necks or tanned bodies. I notice this a lot especially in Chinese dramas. I think it was so bad in this because of all the outdoor shots.
I’ sure I’ll watch it again. If only to see the tennis matches.
