Original topic and story which warms your heart

Firstly I have to write I didn't read the manga.
When I first saw the title and description of this drama I just though this would be probably some stupid show with really strange plot and cringy acting.
I was totally wrong! The topic of keeping a human pet is really interesting one and it serves as a cause of several really funny situations - I laughed a lot watching this drama which doesn't happen very often. Also there were some situations where I felt bad, sad or angry and I love when some show makes me feel all these emotions. And I have to say until last 2 episodes I really couldn't imagine how this could end for everyone involved and I was surprised how all the personal stories were finished and in the end it gave me the best ending I could wish for.
The cast is very well chosen and I love acting of all the main cast, I really felt for the characters like they were my own friends and in the end I have to admit I cried a lot.
I don't see any negatives on this show, just go and give it a try, you won't regret! Especially if you like some cuddling moments and feelings of unconditional love.

I've been out of the j-drama loop for a while, so I can honestly say that Kimi Wa Petto was a refreshing way to get back into j-dramas. I have yet to read the manga or watch the 2003 adaptation, so I can only review what I've seen. If the first episode is enough to pull you in, then prepare to binge watch the rest of the series. Kimi Wa Petto is filled with adorably cheesy moments as well as pleasantly steamy moments. It's an enjoyable series, but it's not 100% perfect. Especially when it comes to the pacing of the plot. If you're looking to watch something light with just the right amount of tension and romance, then I would definitely recommend Kimi Wa Petto. :)

Kimi wa Petto is an amazing story in itself, so this series was nice and good! There is this career woman called Sumire who ends up breaking up with her boyfriend because he couldn't deal with her earning more money, being taller than him and having a higher education. Of course she is very hurt, so she wants to find a bit of comfort by buying a pet. Just that morning, there had been a box with a dog in it in front of her house, so she wants to get that dog. Sadly, it is already gone and instead she finds a young guy in said box. He takes her home after she faints and when he refuses to leave her house, she lets him stay under one condition: he has to become her pet.

It is a classic story, has already been told in another series and a movie and is based on a manga. All of them pull on my heartstrings. I just love how Momo and Sumire are and that nobody is really 100% hateful.

The cast for Momo was really good, because he has these big eyes and fluffy hair you would want to see on someone who is a 'pet'. Sumire might not have been the best choice in my opinion, because she looks a bit too young and also always insecure, but still did a good job. Hasumi was a good choice, I think they tried to make him be a bit less serious by having more sound effects, since he himself isn't much of a fun character where Momo and Sumire are really funny. Also, what was that with his lines being replayed three times, in a dreamy manner? At some point I just wanted him to go away. (sorry, Hasumi-senpai!)

It is also inevitable to compare this work to the series with MatsuJun and Koyuki in the main roles. That series was one of the first I ever watched and has a special place in my heart. Aside from that it was so well made, because MatsuJun is a great Takeshi and Koyuki as Sumire was perfect. She has that ice-queen attitude but can also become really warm. I love her, I love MatsuJun, I loved Kimi wa Pet, I didn't expect this new version to reach it. In the end, it really didn't quite reach the 2003 drama, but I enjoyed it very much and was able to finish it within a few days, which speaks for itself. The story was no surprise but I still enjoyed seeing Momo and Sumire.

So, if you liked the old series, you definitely can check this one out as well! If you like cute romance stories, where you don't have to think too much, this one is for you.

Decent Rom-Com

This review is based solely on the drama, as I never read the manga or seen any anime of it. But some of Sumire’s actions screamed manga moment, lol.

LIKES:
Writing:
The various facets of Takeshi’s (Momo) personality. The master/pet concept was cute and not overly sexualized. It did ring true with how pets give us so much patience and love, even though Momo was a human guy. I liked how the story showed us how broken the main characters were due to other people crushing their dreams and hopes. This realization by Sumire and Takeshi, brought about some beautiful scenes. There was no awkwardness due to the 10 year age gap, (although in 2023 American Hollywood people are marrying over 20 yrs age gap, so it’s not really shocking), because of there not being any sex between master and pet. Also Momo/Takeshi was 20 yrs old (already an adult), who had plenty of sexual experience due to previous relationships. The other sexual moments in the drama were tasteful done without over doing nudity. In some ways Takeshi was more mature than Sumire. There were many moving scenes between those two, as their relationship grew and their characters changed due to each other. Comedic moments were well crafted, didn’t feel forced or predominant. The ending was satisfying.
Subtitles:
Very well done, I wasn’t annoyed with bad grammar.
Acting:
All of the cast was well selected and brought their characters to life. Shison Jun was amazing showing the diversity of roles his character played and the emotions he had. There’s one part were he shows his anger and it meshes so well with the story. He was superb in this role and seeing his dancing was a treat. Iriyama Noriko really pulled off the naivety and introverted character of Sumire. The two of them had perfect chemistry for each stage of their relationship. Decent kissing that didn’t gross me out, for the most part.
Music:
The theme song Rainbow Rain suited the rom-com well and the other music was okay too.

DISLIKES:
Production:
Shaking camera syndrome in some scenes, but for the most part it was okay filming. Also the last few episodes felt a little rushed.
Editing:
There were some episodes that seemed choppy and didn’t flow as the scenes changed, which I think is sloppy editing.
Writing:
There were a few times that sexual intimacy was forced, especially between Sumire's Sensei and herself. There seemed to be only one time (his angry moment) between Takeshi and Sumire, but it wasn’t as cringy. The female pet didn’t fit as well and was given less time to develop, hence having no impact.
FX:
The facial wounds on Takeshi healed too quick, like they forgot to put that makeup on.

OVERALL:
I watched each episode and practically binged it. It’s an easy watch, without too much angst, but a little heavy on the characters crying. I enjoyed it and rewatched it, to leave a review, because the first time I didn’t. I would recommend it for anyone to watch.

2017 version vs. 2003

I noticed a lot of the reviews negatively compare the 2017 version of Kimi Wa Petto to the 2003 version but as someone who thought both versions had plusses and minuses I thought I'd compare them a little more fairly.

----------------
Female Lead
----------------
I liked the FLs in both versions but they are very different. The 2003 FL is a hard driving bitchy ice queen who would rather die than cry in front of anyone but then goes home and freaks out when no one but her pet is looking. The actress is extremely good at letting you see the vulnerability in her eyes even when she's struggling to maintain the facade. The 2017 FL is more like a class topper, she is exceptionally good at her job and always does her homework but she's deeply insecure and when she gets into a relationship with her senpai she can't bring herself to show him any vulnerabilities or flaws. It's hard to say who I prefer because they are so different from one another. I enjoyed and appreciated both.

--------------
Male Lead
--------------
Here's where my biases come in because I really can't stand the 2003 ML, Matsumoto Jun. He is like nails on a chalkboard for me and the main reason I wasn't able to finish the 2003 version even though I loved the FL. I'm not convinced he's a world class dancer, he's just ridiculously OTT and I couldn't ship him with the FL. The 2017 ML, Shison Jun, is much better in the role as a gifted dancer who is buckling under the pressure of his career but heals himself by becoming Sumire's pet. Shison brings a lovely vulnerability to the character but he is also able to convince you that he is actually a for real man who is maturing in front of our eyes to become a person who can truly be a partner to Sumire.

----------------------------
Secondary characters
----------------------------
I liked the 2MLs in both versions but the relationship the FLs have with the men is very different. The 2017 version has a lot more skinship but the sex scenes with the 2ML aren't sexy at all. The FL always looks like she's cringing whenever they get intimate and it's so incredibly uncomfortable to watch, I think on purpose to show how the FL can never be vulnerable with him. That's why I think the portrayal of the 2ML works better in the 2017 version, those horribly uncomfortable sex scenes provide an enormous contrast with the scenes of Sumire cuddling Momo.

Fukushima the receptionist was a lot more interesting in the 2017 version, we gain some insight into why she's such a schemer and it makes her a lot more sympathetic. I also found her interactions with Momo to be eye-opening, his cold-blooded side comes out with her and he's willing to harm her to protect his owner which is kind of chilling. Fukushima's relationship with Hasumi becomes poignant at the end and I was actually glad they got their happy ending.

The friend is cute in both versions, don't have much to say about that. The coworkers in the 2017 version were better developed and I especially liked the colleague who questioned the ethics of journalism.

The 2003 version has a psychiatrist with a small dog and he was great, wish they'd had the character in the 2017 version, especially because it's much longer so they had time for him.

--------
Story
--------
The 2003 version has 10 episodes compared with 16 episodes for the 2017 version. I think the 2017 version could be shorter, maybe 12-14 episodes, because it gets a little draggy and repetitive toward the end. On the other hand, the increased length means we get a lot more development of the relationship between Hasumi & Sumire and Hasumi & Momo (Momo genuinely likes Hasumi vs. the more antagonistic rivalry between the men in the 2003 version)

I think with more time to develop 2017 relationship between Hasumi and Sumire, you see how he's not a bad guy in many ways but he's insensitive and selfish when it comes to sex and Sumire will never be able to feel comfortable with him. Something I really liked is when Hasumi gets transferred to Seoul, Sumire becomes depressed and wants to call and text him and her friend observes that she prefers a relationship with an absent boyfriend. (not sure if this happened in the 2003 version since I didn't watch the whole thing)

2003 Sumire seems a lot more in love with Hasumi than 2017 Sumire who seems more in awe of him. The breakup with Hasumi is kind of heartbreaking in the 2003 version but not at all in the 2017 version.

In 2017 we also get a lot more development of Hasumi and Fukushima, including her becoming his pet and learning her back story. It made me much more sympathetic to both characters. It was interesting seeing the contrast between how the owner/pet relationship played out between Hasumi & Fukushima where she was a high school dropout with an alcoholic father vs. Sumire & Momo/Takeshi where he has a high profile career of his own.

I think the breakup was handled better in the 2017 version because it was initiated by Sumire and she and Hasumi were able to be truly honest with each other for the first and last time (both of them come clean about the pet relationships). The 2003 version had a jealous Hasumi dump Sumire after she tells him about her pet.

I prefer the ending of the 2017 version with Momo leaving to pursue his dance career in Europe while Sumire works and waits for him to return. It made more sense to me and showed the growth of the characters better than the 2003 version where the psychiatrist convinces Momo to abandon his trip to Germany and Momo ends up getting hit by a motorcycle and breaking his arm before reuniting with Surime. It feels like the 2003 version very explicitly doesn't want you to see growth in the characters and instead ends it with both of them essentially the same in an undefined relationship that isn't exactly pet and owner anymore but also isn't a full sexual relationship.

-----------------
Final Verdict
-----------------
The 2003 version has a stronger FL. The 2017 version has a more complex and interesting ML, 2ML and 2FL. The 2017 version is much longer and gets draggy but also has better character development and a more interesting ending for all the characters. Honestly, I enjoyed the 2017 version more even with the problems with the FL being significantly weaker than in the 2003 version.

FIRST VERSION IS FAR BETTER!!!

i have never wrote a review about any drama before even tho i really love some of the dramas very much that i have always wanted to write all good things about every dramas i watch, only if one day i plan to write any reviews!
-
So, Ik every drama has some flaws but wtf was this? This version is just so stupid and dumb
I don't have words they literally made Sumire look sooo dumb & stupid unlike 2003’s fml she was the leading lady. She was independent and hard working. What we got here? A worse version of her.. There's a huge difference between 2017 & 2003’s Sumire’s. I mean wtf? Why did i planned to watch the new version?
Although i heard new versions are always refreshing and better from old one's but this-She never actually loved our male lead they showed so many scenes of adulting of Senpai and her which wasn't really necessary lol they dragged Senpai & Sumire’s relationship a LOT!! Like almost till the end i remember, out of nowhere at last few eps she falls for him (male lead)? our male lead comes back and she says yes to his proposal??? OUR little Takeshi got so few screen space with his Sumire-chan in this version. i have always hated 2017’s fml the most. They made her look so dumb and a women who's nothing Infront of others. They ruined the independent & strong Sumire-chan our Momo loved. This version’s Momo was a little naughty and more mature than 2003’s but which was the only thing i loved and our Jun did justice to Momo’s character too but!!! they made the main character the leading lady look clueless and foolish whole time!! I just rewatched 2003’s version right after finishing 2017’s version cause i couldn't able to take it anymore...they literally made her look so helpless what else to say!
better go and watch 2003’s version y'all & then decide by yourselves.

This was a weird one the female lead has pet fetish, the male lead acts like a kid and the female lead from many episodes ago, knew she was in love with him, but continuously had sex with the second male lead while she thinks about the guy she loves. how is this? Not sad she makes bad decisions after bad decisions. She knows the guy cheats on her and still have sex with him until episode 15 even though she recognized this, she's in love with someone else then only when the young man she calls a pet leaves her then she breaks up with the man who is the second male lead? It feels what did I just watch. if this is the state of the world were you love someone but you fuck someone else all the time. like make a decision only when the person leaves then you make the choice. That's sad, but does the state of the dating. And for some reason they wrote the second man lead better than the Male lead any man you would want to be the second male lead because the male lead in this is just sad very sad. No man in real life would want to be in that situation? The woman you love has sex with another man constantly

Human Intimacy Tamagotchi Style

So far I've seen two live action versions of this popular manga series in Japan, and this one is worth your time.

The story
A career woman in her thirties takes in a ballet dancer eight years her junior as a pet. At work she's in a relationship with a conventionally perfect boyfriend. The man proposes to her, but she's reluctant to accept him. Somehow she got addicted to the dopamines of petting her ballet dancer, especially his tousled hair that she washes every single day.

The actors/cast
I liked this version, the ML/FL are fitting for the story and the acting was quite natural considering the fact that this is a manga story.

The good and the bad
It seems weird, a story about a woman who shares her apartment with a man under the pretense that he's her old dog " Momo". She can cuddle him whenever she likes, no strings attached, like he's a living Tamagotchi. At work she's a cold fish, in such a way that her colleague/boy friend gets seduced by another woman who seems more open to him. So, is this just a love story, or perhaps a reference to human intimacy that is lost and found again? If so, I liked that statement, just like the message that you don't have to follow a conventional life style.

Overall
Anyway, I enjoyed You're My Pet like a fairytale. The actors have good chemistry, I liked their dialogues, and their kisses. This adaption has a sound, fulfilling ending, so if you like sweet romance, this is for you.

It's very different from your usual rich good looking male and poor brainless/helpless girl.
It's a really good watch. The length and pace of story development is great.
It talks about difficulty of surviving in the work force/society as a 30 year old female, one's pride and search for perfect/materialistic approach vs love. also the idea of pet/animal is better than human company.

I think the length of this show is perfect. 16 episode is a really good middle length.
The usual 11 is way too short for my liking.

I usually judge a show pretty harshly and there's not many I like. I've watched Jdrama, Kdrama, Cdrama you name it and this one on the top of my Rom-Com list.
It's a light hearted warm drama and it delivers that. If you watch it for what it is and don't judge it with all the real life logic and common sense then it's a really good adaption.

You'll like it if you are looking for the following:
pretty or handsome cast
living together
older female with younger male
personal development
challenge in society as a female in their 30
growing up & becoming responsible
comedy
finding love

Nothing amazing, but worth the watch, if not for anything else but Momo

I enjoyed watching it, but I wasn't blown away into loving it. Momo definitely made the drama, he's adorable and I loved his acting. Sumira was kind of annoying and it took her forever to realize her feelings for Momo. I am definitely a fan of lots of skinship and I loved all the moments between the leads, but I wish their had been a bit less between her and the SML, who I thought was rather annoying.

Overall I'd say it is worth watching, but I don't think I'll personally ever watch it again, except for maybe only a few scenes between the leads, because some parts were really cute.

Great show. I'd read the manga and didn't really like it all that much, but decided to give the drama a watch as I was needed something to feed my drama addiction. I have to say that I enjoyed it a lot. At first, I wasn't too sure about the whole pet-master relationship. But as the show went on, I really felt for the lead female and male. They were both great actors. The plot fell flat sometimes and I felt a lot of focus was put on the female leads work life, but there was enough of takeshi on the screen to keep me wanting more. I loved his character so much and it was great how his character could go from cute and cuddly, to serious and emotional. The bond and closeness the two leads had was very touching and special. I would watch this show again, for sure.
