The Most Refreshing Rom-Com of 2021

Before the release of Hometown Cha Cha Cha, we watched K-Dramas such as Penthouse, Nevertheless, etc., and this was such a refreshing break from the genres that were airing. It's reminiscent of the old 2015-2018 rom-coms I watched and dearly loved, but instead of teenagers, they're actually adults (34F and 35M) which I am so thankful for. The main couple has great chemistry with one another and I can't help feel like a teenage girl squealing at every scene with the both of them together. I love the city girl and country boy trope too, so I already love them together. Plot-wise, as of now, the pacing is great. Music-wise, the intro is also refreshing. I can't help but keep using the word refreshing in this review, but that's what this drama is. I'll return and update the drama after it ends, but so far, it's one of my favorites.

Great Horror Anthology Series

At first, I was confused as to what Nanno was. Initially, I saw Nanno as someone who exposed dark secrets, which is what happened in Episode 1 (which was a great episode to start a series). However, at some points, it felt like Nanno was just provoking people to do bad things. Netflix described her as someone who exposed people's dark secrets, which seemed a little inaccurate to me. However, on Reddit, someone described her as someone sent from hell to test people's worst nature and I think that's a better description of Nanno. She exploits humans' desires and sees how far we would take them in order to achieve those goals. I actually liked that we follow Nanno and she jumps from one school to another because it would have been odd for her to stay the same school and no one notices that she's the one exposing all the secrets. The acting at some parts was lackluster, but I think the actor for Nanno does a good job. I thought her laugh was a little "cartoony" but now, I see that to be an integral part of her character. The cinematography varies from each episode since there are different directors for each one, but I liked the style overall. I think this is a great watch and I like how it can be unpredictable because with Nanno, we never know what she's thinking so we're surprised when she does what she does.

Despite My Ratings, I Liked This Drama

(I'll only focus on the four main characters in this review. Be aware that this review has major spoilers)

This drama is lucky I am a sucker for cringy rom-coms. As usual, we always start with the clumsy-but-bright FL (Shuang Jiao), who of course happens to be the breadwinner of the family. Then we have the guarded-but-sweet ML (Ren Qi), who of course happens to have a major issue that prevents him from connecting with others on a deeper level, which the FL help to overcome or "fix". And just like every cringy rom-coms, they both have some major family issues. Shuang Jiao losing her mom and Ren Qi having a strained relationship with his grandfather. Of course we have the side characters. The second male lead (Lu Xian) who apparently has known the FL before the ML and has liked her before him. Of course he also has some secret connection to the ML which we discover later. Now, this is where we diverge from the typical rom-rom characters. I LOVED that the "second" female lead (Qian Qian) wasn't a mean girl who tried to ruin the relationship between the FL and the ML. We also had a good-girl-bad-guy trope with her story. I am a sucker for this trope as well. I love that she's this "good girl" that has to keep a certain persona and she falls in love with the "bad guy" (Dong Xian) who has a dark past (and of course, is a badass). I also love that the MIL was so supportive of the ML and FL's relationship and wasn't the "take this money" or "you're no good for my son" type character. I know I'm being sarcastic but I actually really enjoyed this drama. It's a light watch if you don't want something too heavy.

Nothing Special

As a Running Man fan, the major reason I picked up this drama was because of Song Jihyo. However, the typical trope of the damsel in distress and all these knights in shining armor trying to protect her is so overdone and this drama does not add anything special to it. To add on to the cliche, all these men turn out to be wealthy, or popular bachelors. The drama tries to make Aejong seem more independent by showing her as a diligent producer, which is okay, but it does not make her stand out from the previous female leads that have done this trope. The story also fails to fully address the overarching concept as to who the father is. Aejong has already met the three men from her personal life, yet, how come she doesn't seem to be worried that one of these men will see her daughter and might think it's their child? She spent her whole motherhood trying to hide the father, yet, these men show up and she doesn't seem fazed by it.
