I haven't watched the anime or read the novel.All opinions are from watching the drama.I liked the pacing of the plot. It really allowed the watcher to get to know all the characters. And the acting of all the actors was great. Hope to see more character development though in the next seaon especially Tang San. The fights could have been better but i understand why it was. As this drama was originally shot with a low budget. The music was irritating at times but overall an interesting and bingeworthy drama.

A True Love Story Never Ends
OOL told the love story between Gu Wei and Lin Zhixiao. At first glance ,it is nothing special. but as the story progress you are drawn into the lives of two people each with their own contrasting personalities and families. The story really makes you believe that Lin Zhixiao and Gu Wei were meant for each other and will continue to be together despite any obstacles. The initial episodes were a bit slow but the story picks up after the first 4 episodes. I actually read the novel but despite the changes in the drama, I felt it stayed quite true to the essence of the novel. That is it emphasized the themes of love and family as shown in the novel. The drama also didn't revolve too much around misunderstandings. Our lead couple quickly resolved their misunderstandings which is something I really appreciated. I also loved the addition of the little theatres. It was a really creative touch. The aspects about Mr Lin's illness was also well handled, I cried so much at the last two episodes. The drama showed how important it is to cherish your loved ones and also showed how the circle of life goes on.Yang Zi really played Lin Zhixiao so well, her acting was on point always. And I laughed so much at the comedic scenes. Xiao Zhan playing Gu Wei portrayed Gu Wei 's inner thoughts and mannerisms so well, in fact he seemed just like the Gu Wei from the novel.
Ending the review here by saying, the oath of love is the perfect drama to watch after a tiring day.

You make your own choices in this world
When I started this drama, I didn't expect to get so invested in it but I did. First of all the writing of the drama is so good, each character is used to their maximum effect, even the side characters are so engrossing. The drama is all about choice and it was very vivid of it's protrayal of old Beijing and the impact of the culutral revolution especially on a group of youngsters. I also like unlike many male centric dramas, the male lead is not a Gary Stu, he doesn't get everything handed to him, rather the drama shows the choices made by him effect him and everything else. This is evident in how the drama used a number of episodes to show the male lead recovering from his wartime injuries.The acting and the cast are top notch. I started this drama for Xiao Zhan. But I ended being so invested in the other characters. Especially Ye Fang, the prophet. I felt sorry for her and annoyed but at the same time loved how level headed her character was. Li Qin as Tong Xiaomeo, I liked the script writer not giving her much scences in the inital episodes but as the episodes went by, her role grew larger until she became Xiao Chunsheng's rock. Xiao Zhan as Xiao Chunsheng in what is his best acting to date, I cried and laughed with Chunsheng and I truly believed that I was watching his life story.
My only gripe about the story was that because it spanned 40 years, the pacing was too fast in the last few episodes but it not deter me from enjoying the drama. For me this drama is 10. While I may not rewatch the entire drama again, I certainly will be watching parts of the drama.

Do not watch this drama when you are hungry
As the title suggests, Royal Feast showcases a lot of food, the preparation and the eating of it. I liked watching how the food was prepared and it added to the visual feast of this drama. This drama was one of my anticipated dramas partly because I wanted to see a cdrama set in the kitchen and also because I wanted to witness the reunion of the Xu Kai x Wu Jinyan cp from Yanxi Palace.The Good:
The costumes, aesthetics and song choices used in the drama were really good.
I loved the friendship between Ziping and Yao Zijin. It was probably my favourite part of the drama.
The Bad:
The storyline was not well developed, This could be due to some very obvious editing and cutting , there were points where I felt confused with the characters actions. I enjoyed the drama up to the point where the leads get together. Afterwards it felt rather flat.
The sml just seemed to be constantly plotting and there was no character development for him. There also seemed to be no character development for the sfl as well. In fact I actually would have liked to see a romance bloom between the sfl and sml as there seemed to be potential there, rather than letting the sml just pine for the fl. I liked both Wang Yizhe and Wang Churan's acting but after seeing them in better works, I think this was not their strongest performance.
The same goes for Xu Kai and Wu Jinyan . Wu Jinyan's performance felt stiff at times. It could be also due to her character seeming like such a Mary Sue. She is perfect in everything. Xu Kai performance felt alright but even his character didn't seem to experience much development.
Final thoughts:
I also thought the drama might show the story of Empress Sun more ( Yao Zijin character) and her struggles with dealing with her son. So I am disappointed that we did not get to see more of Yao Zijin as Empress. Overall giving the drama 7.5 because I liked the pretty aesthetics and the food.
