I emphatize with Hae Eun
I must admit I’ve skipped a couple of scenes, except Hae Eun’s parts.. I came across this comment on Reddit and thought I’d share it here since it’s exactly how I felt and what I wanted to share from a viewers pov…
Haeeun was the star of the show because she was open and honest with her feelings, and a lot of the scenes were so cinematic people thought they were directed lol. Like, this scene where she watches Nayeon and Gyumin excitedly leave for their date and tries to hold her tears back while she does her makeup in front of the mirror. It gives heartbroken heroine. And she's said since that she didn't even know there was a camera in that mirror because there are tons of things she did in front of there (like changing) that she wouldn't have done if she'd known.
And then the scene where she is talking to Jisoo (who was going on a date with Gyumin) and she's pretending that he sends her lots of texts when everyone (including the viewers) knows she's lying. It's admittedly pathetic, and Jisoo even laughs, but it captured a lot of hearts because you can feel her desperation and her honesty - she wasn't there to make lots of money or be popular with the audience, she was just in love with her ex, which is the whole premise of the show.
There's also the scene in the second half of this video where she comes out of the house after lying to Jisoo about the texts and she just cries and cries, and her legs give out from under her from all that crying. A lot of people have experienced that - when you're just so heartbroken that your body has no strength to contain all those emotions. And she wasn't doing that for the cameras, she was doing that in the dark, on the pavement. It's pathetic, but it's relatable. Not all of us can be super cool badasses when we come into contact with an ex, and not many of us have been in love with someone for as long as she has.
You're allowed to not like her, but you could not script a better storyline for a show if you tried. It's gorgeous and heartbreaking and pathetic and desperate. And she made amends with her ex, her ex cried over his heartbreak too (that scene in the car is so heartbreaking as well), and she got a man who loved her despite all that heartbreak and history. That's why she's the star of the show, not necessarily because she had the best personality or the healthiest relationship.
(my addition to this comment)
Despite her struggles and pain, she was never calculative nor manipulative, she was genuinely a kind person, who went through so much…
