A comedic take on issues of coming out in a conservative society

Where many a movie and series fails on showcasing one or more issues faced by the LGBTQ community, along came this short story that does a great job at showing a contrast in the acceptance of the LGBTQ people in the society.

The story does not waste time in showing the romantic journey of our two main leads, Ryosuke and Mizuki and instead jumps right into their wedding scene wherein we are introduced to a major problem. Ryosuke’s family and all his guests have no idea that he getting married to a guy and is worried how they will react when they ultimately find out. Despite this, Ryosuke and Mizuki decide to go ahead with the wedding and will deal with that issue when it arises.

This is where the movie paints a scene; On one side we have Mizuki’s family all happy and delighted to see the grooms walking down the aisle. On the other side in stark contrast Ryosuke’s family is confused and when the father realises what is going on he immediately objects to the wedding. Both the families move to the reception where one hilarious mishap after another, Mizuki decides to not just call off the wedding but break-up with Ryosuke.

All these issues arising from the fact that Ryosuke was unable to come out to his family especially his conservative father. The message subsumed in the comedy that coming out in a conservative society is not easy and fear of repercussions forces many people to remain in the closet. Not all families can be as open and understanding as Mizuki’s. There is also Ryosuke’s folly of trying to keep the family happy by not clearing up the misunderstanding before they reach the day of the wedding.

I recommend this movie not because it does a wonderful job at showcasing this issue but is a conversation starter and you get to laugh while these concerns are introduced as the story progresses
