SPOILERS

A much calmer episode with some character development and just a bit movement of the plot forward.Gao visits Liu Xiang but during the meeting Liu Xiang dies by what it looks like self-poisoning, therefore suicide. The incident is reported to the empress who takes it as a confession of guilt. Gao, Siyue and Erlang have a brief confrontation as they believe Gao is somehow responsible for this death, which actually is an obstacle to their investigation as Liu Xang, the last witness who could lead them to someone higher up, is now dead. When Liu Ran discovers the dead body of her uncle she is inconsolable, and things become even worse for her when Erlang tells her that her uncle had a hand in the murder of his father. There was a touching moment between the couple when Erlang tries to visit her in the room where she is secluded but she doesn't answer; it goes to show the ground Erlang needs to cover to become an actual partner to his wife, which he is unable to do right now. The Ghetto (the Unwelcomed Well of previous episodes, the place where Gao hails from) is finally unsealed by the authorities and the administrator goes to Gao to inform him about it. Gao feels a failure that he couldn't expose the real killer of his comrades and now that Liu Xiang is dead all seems lost. The issue of the stolen copper is not settled though: they all independently realize that a large part of the copper is still missing since the counterfeit coins they discovered in the meantime cannot account for all of it. They suspect that the Four Seasons, an secret organization in the capital, is responsible for all the deaths. Erlang visits the Ghetto and with the help of a little street bum he finds a hidden workshop where weapons are manufactured.

This leads them upriver where in a secret workshop laborers work with the stolen copper. The laborers take a notice of the two intruders and chase them. While Erlang is injured, Gao rescues him and asks him to go back and he is vanished to an unknown direction. In the meantime, family Liu's supporters become aware of the troubles surrounding them and go to beg the empress for forgiveness, but she ignores them. In the meantime, Siyue visits Erlang's wife to find out about his whereabouts but he shows up eventually. Later, Gao visits Liu Xiang and makes it clear to him that he is not interested in this copper smuggling business but only to find the Chuing Divine, but to his surprise Liu Xiang claims to be the one he is looking for.

SPOILERS

Gao retrieves the accounts from the room and escapes from the mansion. Along with Erlang and Siyue they visit a Buddhist temple that is associated with the Inner Guards. There Han, an inner guard, takes the accounts to decipher them because they are written in code language. But he is assassinated by Liu Xiang's associate. Before dying Han gives Gao instructions on how to meet with Inner Guards leader which he does and offers him to collaborate. From what I understood this Inner Guard leader is some kind of royalty, maybe even the king Gao saved when his comrades died, but I am not sure. It looks like there is a traitor in the inner guards and Gao offers to help expose them.

Some minor background developments and some character development in this episode.Gao and Erlang stumble upon the dead body of the concubine. SPOILERS

Gao Bing Zhu conducts an autopsy on Baili Hong Yi's father corpse and declares that he had been poisoned. Baili Hong Yi believes him and starts investigating the guests of his wedding; he suspects that a high official with access to the palace managed to get hold of a rare poison from there and subsequently poisoned his father. Gao Bing Zhu next partners with Si Yue to access father Baili's archives which have been confiscated by officials. They both enter the library were the archives are kept but her brother catches them and orders her to leave. Gao Bing Zhu nevertheless manages to read some of the documents and sends a note to Si Yue that hints that something is going on with the metal copper.Gao Bing Zhu then finds an old acquaintance who can guide him to the place where copper is transported to the city to build a giant Buddha. He suspects that something is amiss with the process and that the real killer might have an association with the copper transport to the city. This was the most gripping episode so far, with the investigation finally getting more serious. The only part that annoyed me was the women's actions: Baili Hong Yi's wife is dutiful to a fault, forgiving all his bad behavior and following him blindly, while screeching his name several times during the episode. Si Yue on the other hand obeys her brother and surrenders to him the decree the empress has granted her without complain; how can she ignore her duty and an official assignment because her brother tells her so is beyond me.

Siyuen then has to use the empress decree to vow for Gao's innocence when troops arrive to save them. Her brother still tries to control her; he insists to declare the case closed and accuse the deal Bailin Yan father as guilty of corruption of the copper case. Meanwhile, Erlang visits the last invitee who didn't attend his wedding: he has been dead and after an autopsy Erlang reveals to his wife that he didn't die of accidental burning but of something else.
