Live action dramas and movies based on comics and anime

Movies and dramas adapted from Asian comics (manga, manhwa, manhua) and anime.

All genres except GL and BL (since the genre isn't everyone's cup of tea, and besides; I have a ton of BL lists--including one listing all Asian BL based on comics and novels.)

Since I'm a complete comic-junkie, I do watch live action adaptations of all my favourites--but there are tons and tons and tons of them... Not all to my taste--but here they are. (There'll be many missing, these are only the ones I know of.) Note; In some cases--the comic version might be created AFTER a movie/drama. But I'll include those, as well.

I won't list sequels nor remakes from the same country--since there are sometimes tons of them, but will list versions from different countries.

All lists updated sporadically with new titles and comments/mini reviews.

    Japanese Movie - 2014

    7.0

Adapted from shounen/seinen manga "Kamisama no Iutoori" by Fujimura Akeji and Kaneshiro Muneyuki.

The movie is... not exactly good, but for a fan of the manga, it's fairly decent.
(The manga is completely insane. I love it.)

  • Bakuman.

    Japanese Drama - 2013, 16 episodes

    7.5

Japanese adaptation of the shoujo manga "Itazura na Kiss" by Tada Kaoru.

  • Bunny Drop

    12. Bunny Drop

    Japanese Movie - 2011

    8.0

Adaptation of the josei manga by the same name (basically. "Usagi doroppu" = rabbit/bunny drop) by Unita Yumi.

  • Caçador da Cidade

    13. Caçador da Cidade

    Korean Drama - 2011, 20 episodes

    8.5

Korean adaptation (that can be discussed, since it's not very faithful to the original manga) of the Japanese manga by the same name, by Hoji Tsukasa.

    9.5

Live action version of the josei manga by the same name, by Kimura Marumi and Minato Kanae.

(Don't let the "josei" stamp fool you... this is DARK, psychological suspense, not just a drama.)

  • Crying Freeman

    16. Crying Freeman

    Japanese Movie - 1995

    7.0

Adaptation of the seinen manga by the same name, by Ikegami Ryoichi and Koike Kazuo.

  • Doce Lar

    19. Doce Lar

    Korean Drama - 2020, 10 episodes

    7.5

Based on the webtoon horror-manhwa by Kim Carnby and Hwang Young-chan.

The manhwa is excellent--the drama is worth a watch and very cool in many ways--but the plot changes were so massive that it really put me off. Therefore not too good a rating from me...

Thai adaptation of the classic Japanese shoujo manga with the same name, by Kamio Yoko.

Has original Japanese versions (the best of them all) as well as Korean and Taiwanese versions.

Actually--all the three first versions are good, in their own way. Taiwan's "Meteor Garden" is often overshadowed by the much beloved Japanese original, as well as the super flashy Korean version--but give it a chance. It may be dated in looks, but it's actually just as good as the others. Better, in some ways.

(Yoshida--a brilliant mangaka--is also the mangaka behind the excellent SEINEN/SHOUNEN manga "Banana Fish". I refuse to call that piece shoujo (and definitely not "BL", as too many claim.) The only reason it was labeled "shoujo" is sexism. Because the mangaka is female and females "can't" do action/thrillers.)
