Try Battle of Changsha.
Sometimes I have the feeling that japanese or taiwanese dramas are also way over the top.....

You should try Cruel Romance ;)
BOSS&ME  OR  Battle of Changsha
Maybe it's also a matter of what kind of acting you're used to? I'm used to korean, but I'm aware that there is a certain korean style which can be cartoonish, cutesy or over the top... Now I don't even pay attention, but I remember at the beginning of my k-drama days I really noticed it and it bothered me. I was reminded of this when I tried to initiate a friend to a drama (Sungkyunkwan Scandal) and she couldn't get past the acting (and it's not like she usually notices acting in the western things she watches, it was just the style that was so different).

I often find chinese acting stiff, taiwanese too dramatic and japanese a bit underwhelming. But then some dramas suck me in and I get into the flow of show, acting included.
I used to think this way, until I watched Love Me If You Dare :)

I also just finished Battle of Changsha, and again, I have been proven wrong :)
@Cantiara - same here. I had tried a few CDramas but never really got into them until Love Me If You Dare. I just started Battle of Changsha.

Does anyone know of any other really good CDramas? I'm sure I'll be ready for another one soon.
@ EnSeoled: Nirvana in Fire! It's really a masterpiece.
@EnSeouled Nirvana in Fire, The Disguiser, Sound of the Desert, Wu Xin: The Monster Killer. Nirvana in Fire is probably the best out of these from acting to production values.

One thing I always consider with acting in eastern shows is that acting in general originates from theater and western theater have very different feel than the eastern. You can see the same "over the topness" you see in cdrama in Chinese theater, so while bad acting exists there is also a cultural thing in the mix.  Another thing is the intonation, every language has its own and Chinese intonation (the way the pitch of the voice fluctuate) is rather complex and very different from that of western languages, so again while bad acting exists there is also a linguistic thing in the mix.

The thing that drives me nuts in jdramas is not so much the acting as the bad camerawork, not everything needs to be as pretty and tightly shot as in Rurouni Kenshin, but still I would like sometimes to forget that I'm watching actors on a set.
You should try Boss&me, You are my sunshine, Love me if you dare, Cruel Romance (historical in the 90s) or Women on the breadfruit tree. For historical, you have to watch Beauty's rival in Palace!! It's so good!! You should also try Taiwanese dramas- the old ones are better. Some Taiwanese dramas I like are Murphy's law of love (recent), My lucky Star, Fated to love you, It started with a kiss, or Autumn Concerto.
my fav one that I watched the whole thing was 'In Time with you' It had the strongest acting I've seen so far in tai/Chinese dramas. I agree some of the other shows the acting and line delivery does not sound sincere. In time with you, did pretty well and even got a kdrama spin off..The time that I loved you 7000 days
I agree. The overall production quality is often bad as well and they tend to make everything much more dramatic then it would normally be for instance: instead of calmly walking across the street they feel the need to include a dramatic flying leap across the road while running across a few roof tops with an added dramatic stunt twist in midair before reaching their destination. while I'm left to wonder if any of that is even really necessary I will say that there is a strange addictive quality to them and I have rather enjoyed several chinese dramas if you put the corniness and overdramatic jump scenes aside.
If you are looking for good acting I recommend Bu Bu Jing Xin =) It has amazing actors and it is one of my favorite Chinese historical dramas of all time.

I think it's the dubbing that makes it seem fake. Cruel romance script and acting was great but the dubbing really irritated me. I did get over it eventually and just realised it's one of those things as it carried on through lady and liar too and too late to say I love you.

I mean WHY do they need to emphasise foot steps, silly girly laughing etc.
