RECAP: Gu Family Book ep 9

Tae Seo stumbles out of a room dragging a sword behind him. Choi Kang Chi sees him walking in his direction and runs to greet him only to be met with a sword through his belly. Everyone out in the courtyard watches in shock as this happens. Tae Seo avenging his father's death as Kang Chi is the killer in his mind. Yeo Wool blocks Tae Seo’s second attack on the fallen Kang Chi. She stops him from killing Kang Chi.




Meanwhile Cheung Jo is at the gisaeng house drinking it up in front of the gisaeng Wol Sun and her followers. She tries to assert herself as someone that isn’t a pushover but finds herself made into their laundry maid.




Tae Seo is interrogated by Dam Pyeong Joon. He is absolutely convinced it was Kang Chi that killed his father, but when questioned he cannot remember anything else. Dam Pyeong Joon figures out that Tae Seo was hypnotized.




Yeo Wool asks her father what happened to Tae Seo after the interrogation and is told he will be under the influence of the hypnotism until they can get it reversed by the same person. The problem is they don’t know who did it. Tae Seo is left by himself and he remembers the close relationship he had with Kang Chi in the past.




At the gisaeng house Cheung Jo is hanging up the now washed clothes of all the other gisaengs. Her work is not finished however as a group of gisaengs walk by and throw all the washed clothes on the floor claiming they were barely even wet. Wol Sun smugly watches her friends mess up Cheung Jo’s work from nearby as does Head Chun’s servant woman who reports the events to Head Chun. Cheung Jo starts washing again.




Night has fallen and Yeo Wool doesn’t hear good news from Kang Chi’s doctor. Kang Chi won’t stop bleeding and they worry he won’t survive the night. Yeo Wool goes to check on him and sees the bracelet on his arm.




She reaches for it when she remembers So Jung’s warning not to interfere in Kang Chi’s life. Despite the warning she takes the bracelet off of Kang Chi anyway.




Nothing happens. She takes off his bandage but the cut is still there.




Suddenly blue orbs start appearing in the air and they head to Kang Chi’s sword wound where they seal it closed. Kang Chi suddenly wakes up but his eyes have reverted to gumiho form. He sits up and knocks Yeo Wool over so that she hits her arm on a candlestick.




He gets in attack position, as he demands to know what Yeo Wool is doing. Yeo Wool shows him the bracelet and tells him everything is okay and he just needs to put it back on. He holds out his arm for Yeo Wool to put it back on for him. His eyes revert to normal and he faints on her again.




At that moment Gon Yi enters the room to Yeo Woo’s relief and his annoyance when he sees Kang Chi passed out on top of her. At this time Tae Seo walks to the doorway of room he has been left in to look outside.




Yeo Wool bandages Kang Chi with Gon Yi’s help. When that is done Gon Yi lets Kang Chi fall to the ground as he has noticed the blood stain on Yeo Woo’s arm and angrily walks outside. Yeo Wool follows him and asks he doesn’t tell her father what she did. Tae Seo watches their short discussion from his doorway. From his expression, it looks like he might have feelings for Yeo Wool.




In his room, Kang Chi snores loudly as he is now completely healed and resting. Cheung Jo doesn’t have the same luxury. She is resting against a pillar exhausted from her laundry duty when Head Chun finds her. Head Chun gives her a sort of pep talk as she tells her that being a gisaeng is more than just selling liquor and shows her the drum set she uses for performances.




The next morning Choi Kang Chi is reported missing to Dam Pyeong Joon. Yeo Wool hears this and takes off looking for him. Choi Kang Chi is in the kitchen devouring a bowl of potatoes when he startles a kitchen worker entering with supplies. Kang Chi is focused on food this morning and asks for something with flesh to eat. The kitchen worker says he can’t help him because he will get in trouble with Gong Dal who is in charge of housekeeping but Kang Chi brushes off the worry saying he will take care of him. At that moment, Gong Dal enters and surprises Kang Chi who hadn’t noticed him enter. He gets beat up by the elderly man and his broom so that he is forced to kneel in front of him.




He is hit again and finds Yeo Wool has joined the group in the kitchen. Yeo Wool drags him out by the ear and scolds him outside for not acting like he was stabbed the day before. Kang Chi thanks her for saving him but tells Yeo Wool not to take the bracelet off him again as he doesn’t care about others but doesn't want Yeo Wool to be hurt.




Gon Yi finds them talking (Why did they change his hairdo) and tells Yeo Wool Dam Pyeong Joon is calling them and also wants to Kang Chi or as Gon Yi calls him “THAT distasteful person”. Kang Chi tries to start arguing with Gon Yi but Yeo Wool drags him away.




They arrive for the meeting with Dam Pyeong Joon who enters the room after them followed by Gon Yi who has brought a blind folded Tae Seo with him. Kang Chi is told that Tae Seo is under the influence of a hypnotic compulsion and so should avoid him. They are both also told that four masters at the academy they are at will decide whether they deserve to stay. Kang Chi says he will not avoid Tae Seo on purpose and leaves.




Outside he is startled by Gong Dal again who tells him breakfast is ready before he walks away grabbing his back and acting like someone who could not possibly have beaten Kang Chi up that morning.




Dam Pyeong Joon and the rest of the group are still in the room talking and they discuss Kang Chi’s stubbornness before moving the meeting to a more private location. They have a plan to break into the 100 years Inn and retrieve the 5000 nyang that was left hidden in what is now Jo Gwan Woong’s room.




At the 100 years Inn a carpenter is checking out the damage done to the floor in Jo Gwan Woong’s room by the broomstick Kang Chi crammed into the floorboards. He is told to fix it in 4 days by Jo before he is dismissed. Jo Gwan Woong’s head guard brings in the inn worker Choi from where he had been thrown in jail for not collaborating Jo Gwan Woong’s story about Kang Chi being at the inn. He is asked if any secret storage rooms are at the inn but Choi claims he doesn’t know of any.




At the same time Dam Pyeong Joon has a visitor join his meeting with tells Yi, Yeo Wool, and Tae Seo. It’s the carpenter. He was sought out after Lee Soon Shin told Dam Pyeong Joon that he would likely be called to fix the floor he knew Kang Chi messed up. The plan is for the group to join the carpenter works and secretly move the money out while the floor is repaired.




In another part of the academy, Choi Kang Chi has found the dining room and is excited to find food. He has trouble acting injured as he is told where his place is to dine. He is not happy to find his table has only porridge and soy sauce when everyone else has normal food.




He goes and complains to Gong Dal for discriminating against him with food. Gong Dal says he must not be human to be up and about after being injured and worrying about food. Gong Dal says Kang Chi can have chicken if he can take away his broom. Round 2 of Kang Chi vs. Gong Dal begins. Kang Chi loses. He discovers that Gong Dal is actually one of the 4 masters in charge of deciding if he will stay at the academy.




Yeo Wool puts medicine on the injury she got helping Kang Chi. It looks infected. She just binds it up and heads out to meet the group preparing to go to the 100 hundred Years Inn. Kang Chi is left out and Tae Seo wants to leave Yeo Wool out of the mission to but she protests and gets her way.




Kang Chi is still in the kitchen where Gong Dal has put him to washing dishes. Choi Kang Chi protests but keeps working. Gong Dal suddenly suggests they make a bet. Gong Dal wonders how close Kang Chi is to the navy admiral and wants him to proof it. Kang Chi agrees to bring proof if Gong Dal will grant him a wish. If he fails he will be kicked out.




Jo Gwan Woong arrives at the gisaeng house and is greeted by all the gisaengs. He informs them he will be staying there while his room is under repair. He spots Cheung Jo nearby and heads straight for her. Head Chun keeps an eye on his interaction with her from nearby.




Kang Chi has set out on his bet. He arrives at the 100 Years Inn and joins a group of carpenters heading in. He is almost spotted by Jo Gwan Woong’s guards but makes it inside.




Yeo Wool and Gon Yi arrive shortly later and find Kang Chi waiting for them in Jo Gwan Woong’s room. As he complains about being left out of the plan Kang Chi notices that Yeo Wool is feverish and tries to check her temperature much to Gon Yi’s annoyance. The two boys start arguing until they hear Jo Gwan Woong’s head guard heading towards the room.




The head carpenter tries to stall him outside the room where the three come up with a hiding plan. The guard and carpenter enter the room to find Gon Yi alone with his face now covered. Kang Chi and Yeo Wool have hidden themselves in the secret room. Kang Chi motions for Yeo Wool to go further inside the room but Yeo Wool stumbles and makes a noise as Kang Chi catches her.




The three in the room heard the noise and the head guard is adamant he heard something while the other two play dumb. Inside the storage room, Yeo Wool and Kang Chi stare at each other.




Kang Chi caught Yeo Wool awkwardly to stop him from falling. He grabbed more than he expected with his right hand. He looks down at the hand in question with surprise and then back at Yeo Wool who he is still holding up.




 Both look at the hidden entrance as they hear the guard demand Gon Yi move out of the as he is convinced he heard something.

Laugarza:
At last Kang Chi finally discovers Yeo Wool is a woman! The interaction between them grew so much in this episode. I also liked that in this episode we finally really get to see the charming Kang Chi whose biggest worry of the day was finding something with meat on its bones to eat. It also looks like Head Chun is going to try to mentor Cheung Jo in finding other things to be happy about as a gisaeng.

I hate Gon Yi’s new hair-it physically pains me to look at it. It was fine, was one of the stylists drunk or mad at Sung Joon? I liked all the comedic elements in this episode and that Yeo Wool and Kang Chi are getting closer. I’m still not happy about the bracelet- it’s far too easy to for him to revert to his gumiho self and back without major repercussions.
