Don't bother
I am a believer that if you can't say anything positive... say nothing. However, once in a great while, I feel compelled. I have watched scores of kdramas; some were horrible, some were amazing and the rest fell somewhere in between. There have been only 2 dramas that frustrated me to the point that I needed to comment. The first was "Wild Romance" where Lee Si Young's character acting was so bad that I had to discontinue it because I was continuously yelling at the television. This one is the second. I need to ask viewers, "am I missing something?" because the acting, the story line, the totally unrealistic situations made this more of a farce than a drama. Even if I stretch my imagination until it snaps, I just don't get it. I had high hopes from the beginning because the storyline, though not unique, was my kind of drama. However, from the beginning, the actors were so over the top, I couldn't see an ounce of "truth" in their performances. Let's start with the FL. It's hard to believe she has several dramas in her repertoire because she was such a rookie. She spent the entire 80 episodes (as of now), teary-eyed, shaky-voiced and breathy. I didn't believe she experienced one bit of what she was portraying. I felt no pity whatsoever for her circumstance BUT, I did however, want to make her some chamomille tea and give her some oxygen. The ML didn't seem to know what his character was supposed to do. He was just a blank space. Handsome doesn't make you talented. The rest of the cast seemed to just be following the stage direction. (smile here, yell here, throw something here, ) My deepest thoughts during the entire drama: Would Han Chae Young's face be in a permanent sneer after the drama ended? Does anyone know how to knock? The male lead's bedroom is a revolving door. The FL's writing studio is as busy as an airport. Why does the enemy constantly come there and why, for God's sake does she buzz them in?!?! What is the purpose of the SML? SFL?? and the FL's extended family? Comic relief? Didn't work. Two characters that were doing their best to tread water were Jin Joo Hyung and Oh Young Joo. They did their best, but neither of them had anyone connected to their characters to work off of.I like some of the actors' past performances which makes this even sadder. I really don't know what happened to a show that might have had some success if anyone knew what they were supposed to be doing.
You might ask why I am continuing to watch it? I have to... I just have to. I've made it this far, so I will see it through to the end. If a miracle happens and this show is redeemed, I will return with all of its good points. I promise. Fair is fair.
Final words: I finished watching all of the episodes and I can say, it didn't really get better. I think some of the characters began to get their footing at about the 95th episode, but obviously it was too late to rescue the sinking ship. In my honest opinion, after giving it some more thought, I would put the blame at about 70% writer/director and 30% actors. A good director can draw out better performances from their stars. I think expediency was their main objective, not craft. The ending wasn't too bad, but the relationship between FL and ML was never believable enough from the beginning to justify what happens. I challenge it fiercely. I also challenge their life choices as well. Again, not believeable. As the one actor is driving away ( I won't tell who!) , he gets half of the way down the driveway and chuckles a bit to himself. I think the director wants you to take this as, "oh well, it is what it is". I personally think he is smiling because it was his last scene and he was FREE.

A surprisingly high-quality and addictive daily drama with a murder mystery twist.
From the episodes I've seen, this is the best Korean daily drama so far. I never expected such impressive production quality. The opening scenes were beautifully filmed, with none of the familiar pre-installed KBS interiors we usually see. Of course, this level of cinematography can't be maintained throughout all 100 episodes, given the tight filming schedules (only 20 episodes are filmed in advance before the broadcast) and smaller budget compared to mini-series. Still, even the opening sequence (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QS1DHD85YG8) and OST feel too good for a daily drama. What sets this apart is its engaging story—a murder mystery that keeps you guessing. It’s refreshing to see a daily drama take this approach, making the investigation of the culprit a key element. I especially love the group poster, where all the characters are in a cinema—not only is it funny because it's relatable for the audience, it also makes you curious about each of them, and the plush in the middle adds an intriguing touch. From character relationships (even those are somehow part of the mystery when you start watching) to the plot, everything screams classic makjang. Right from the start, the show delivers shocking, provocative, and over-the-top twists. Initially, I thought the English title (Scandal in Korean - original title) might not hold much weight in the story, but it turned out to be cleverly relevant, and I admire such creativity. Also, the setting of the entertainment industry is a favorite of mine for many reasons in Korean dramas.
The complaints about the plot being messy? Well, it is—but that’s exactly the point. That chaos is part of the fun. Even if it refers to later developments, I’ve seen recent daily dramas take a similar route, and I found them wildly entertaining.
My only concern is that the messiness might come from the production team being pressured to alter the storyline for higher ratings. That’s frustrating, especially since the show already had solid viewership—nearing 10% by the end, its highest rating. Of course, I know that in the past, Korean soaps had even higher ratings, particularly weekend dramas, which were more family-friendly. But unlike typical soaps filled with dull family conflicts, this one demands your attention from the start, making it much more engaging.
Edit: Let me dive quickly into why it wasn't well received here. The drama uses a lot of shock value (sensationalism). The writing focuses a lot on the villain's story (she's despicable - still somehow it's interesting that they make something kinda human out of her). I think it's easy for many to get sick of her (and the rest) because the drama is long. This drama is most definitely not to everyone's taste to begin with. It is the most original daily so far - having watched Elegant Empire which started more as a comedy but in a new way (and slowly intensified), and The Two Sisters which was a melodrama/black comedy right away. This however, has very much of a thriller tone. It might lose in quality and I consider this drama very hard to write even for an experienced writer so I'll stay indulgent as long as the entertainment value is still there. Thankfully I love the cast and their characters, as well as the production quality and OST and I am very intrigued by the story.
The oldest daily drama I attempted to watch (and dropped) was A Man in a Veil, but I can’t say if they were always this "weak" before. Either way, it’s time to stop catering so much to TV ratings and instead consider wider releases on platforms like Netflix or Viki. Kocowa is too limited in both subtitles and popularity, and the quality on YouTube doesn’t compare.
That said, as I mentioned, this has a smaller budget than mini-series, so you can’t expect a conventional revenge storyline. There is definitely revenge—but you get what I mean. This is a makjang soap, and that’s exactly how it should be watched. It’s not for everyone.
Edit: In fact, the "revenge" here is very interesting, because of how the story is written. I can't say much but wow this has nothing to do with other soaps. And the fact that the story follows a drama also called "Scandal" and written by the protagonist is so cool. They are definitely not catering to the usual audiences/expectations here... I love that they are always trying something new these days. That's fine since the ratings are lower than they used to be (imagine caring that much about TV ratings unless it's B&B or Y&R endless kind of crap) but when will they finally consider Netflix/Viki releases? Or they can't for some reason? But the weekend dramas being released literally are of the same length, just different format and likely to be less popular in my opinion.
The acting isn't necessarily bad but struggling. (Don't get me wrong, I do not expect the same level of acting as in mini-series. Even though some stay in this industry while they could switch or already did and others do both... Depends on the actor's preference, offers, popularity (underrated doesn't mean bad), ability and what suits them.) The first episode felt particularly awkward for both lead actresses, but since I didn’t yet know their characters or anything at all for that matter, I decided to wait before judging. I doubt the director intended this, but overall, the performances were still decent—I’ve seen worse and less demanding roles. The issue is that their efforts sometimes felt unnatural, as if they were trying too hard. That said, I’m already a fan of the lead actress from The Escape of the Seven, where she played a badass role I really enjoyed. She looks stunning here as well, and because I already like her, I know this will be an easy watch for me.
Then, the male cast is also very cool, so that's always a big plus.
Finally, the music—both the OST and the background score—is incredibly catchy and has been stuck in my head since I started watching.
In short, the makjang is makjanging really well. This drama is shaping up to be an exciting and unpredictable ride, and I can’t wait to see where it goes next. Just don't take it too seriously I guess. It's a very cool and fun-filled makjang.
Side note: rated 7.4 on imdb by 36 people, which is huge (imdb tends to have lower ratings than here because there are less people rating) and never seen before in a revenge daily. this one in particular reached more people internationally. like I always say that's what dailies need. especially for fans of dramas like the escape of the seven. if you want to watch just do it.
I don't care enough about logical details (if makjang was supposed to be logical it wouldn't be makjang lol) and whether it ends with plot holes or not as long as it's not tasteless. For now it's great makjang. A Man in a Veil had one plot hole after another and I did not like it at all.
Edit: On episode 30 now, I think they struggled at the start because it was the first scenes they filmed so it was awkward and it's not like they are some of the best actors. Han Chae Young (the villain) seems to be lacking even more despite her having more experience than Han Bo Reum... I think Boreum is doing really fine honestly. I kind of like Chaeyoung's acting style as well but I'm not too sure sometimes. Anyway they look so great that it almost fully makes up for the shortcomings. And they were also perfectly casted. Gave the acting a 9/10 instead of an 8 because it got better and I love the casting. I'm enjoying this so much.
About the ending, I think it's gonna be more interesting than I initially thought. I'll come up with an analysis in the comments if it is necessary. But as usual, experience it for yourself, and even if not everything may be answered (or that some things aren't clear), for this one, the ending was undoubtedly envisioned from the start...
