I just can't...

I'm going to preface by saying that I'm a fan of older woman/younger man stories but right off the bat, I wasn't feeling this drama at all. Here are my initial thoughts and a few reasons why I couldn't watch more than 2 episodes...

1. They're step siblings?! I'm sorry, but I'm just so weirded out by this - even if they are not blood-related and did not grow up together, I still count this as incest. It's especially creepy when the ML picks up a random lipstick in the airport scene and just assumes that it belongs to the FL, and instead of giving it back to her, keeps it in his pocket. So weird and creepy. He didn't even say anything when he found out her name and obviously pieced together the fact that she's his step-sister. Ugh.

2. ML's bad acting. I started this drama because I love Angelababy - I think she's an amazing actress and always acts effortlessly, making all of her roles very natural and HER. Despite this, I couldn't continue watching because of the deer-in-headlights look that is permanently plastered on the ML's face. I get that he's extremely young and a "rookie" actor, but bro, can't he give us more than 3 expressions? Being cute can only get you so far - someone give this kid some acting lessons.

3. Lack of chemistry. Yes, I only watched 2 episodes, but I don't sense any chemistry and I also don't understand HOW the ML started liking the FL. At no point in time did the FL do anything to make the ML fall in love with her besides maybe....drop her lipstick???

I want to close out by saying if you want to watch an older woman/younger man done right, I highly highlyyyy recommend "Rational Life" - it's one of my all-time favorites in the category. A strong female lead who couldn't find love, and a young man who is just starting out in his career but is very mature and smart and finds his way into the FL's heart. Their story gradually develops and takes the audience in for a ride with laughter, so many emotions surrounding the taboo of dating a younger male in China, and many sweet and funny moments. The romantic scenes don't seem forced and the ending is *chef's kiss*.

Sorry for going off on this drama, but seriously, the difference between the two dramas is wayy too tangible. Maybe my expectations were too high because of Angelababy but even she couldn't save the wet napkin that is the ML.

A few episodes into the drama and already I know that this drama is not for me. The weird Three Stooges type of background music, sound effects, and humor are not my cup of tea. The humor is going to be at the toilet level I am afraid: there’s already stereotypes of male gay characters, and the FL in her disguise, uses browning/blacking of her face and having short curly hair to appear unattractive. These horrible transphobia and overt racism are a big no for me. The truly sad part is that this came out in 2021. I am dropping this drama like a hot radioactive potato.

Hits the mark with Comedy and Romance but it just feels like there's something missing.

(No Spoilers.)

Behind Your Touch plays on several elements seen in the likes of Strong Woman Do Bong Soon and Crash Course in Romance, wherein a relatively contained level of world-building fuels romance and comedy but also throws in a complicated hint of mystery and crime. However, it executes this plot much better than the other two dramas. So far, it appears to keep you on your toes, never giving too much away, but also creating an environment of bitingly comedic romance and more. I'm a bit worried about the stagnancy of the plot as comedy-mystery-type dramas often miss the mark when it comes to keeping a balance between fast pace and deliberate devices to stall the plot. I'm also... thrown off by the script and waiting for the slapstick character development.

Story:

The plot of this show revolves around a hilarious incident in which our protagonist, Ye-bun, is given the power of being able to see other people's memories by touching their... rear end. I know this is a plot device to create light-hearted, comedic situations but... Yes, a little perverted. Even weirder if the roles were switched around and it was a man gifted such a power. Which does put you off a bit at first as a brief ethical question that leaves room for criticism.

Our protagonist Ye-bun has an interesting set-up as a vet with a dotted past. She's young at heart, despite being in her mid-30s, and immature as well as innovative. Such a rowdy personality is balanced by the male lead Jang-yeol who is sharp, equally comedic given the occasion and is an outsider to the small town, desperate to return to Seoul for unknown reasons. The second male lead, Sun-woo, is presented as that handsome yet quiet outsider that Ye-bun hilariously drools over.

I'm reminded of The Killer's Shopping List in terms of the balance between having such comedic main characters at the forefront of a plot with silent crime lurking in the background. You'll be left howling at the hilarity of some of the situations, secretly loving the townspeople as no detail goes unnoticed with their developed personalities that are present enough to make an impression but not too strong to steal away from the main three characters. At the same time, there is plenty of seriousness to go around.

However... this is what it's been like for the past 5 episodes. I'm still waiting on the character development or at least just something. I don't really know but it just feels like something is missing from this drama to give it that one final push into being good?

Plot-wise, it's those typical procedural dramas with an extra plot brewing in the background. You'll be seeing a lot of new faces, and sometimes you'll have to move on to the next episode being a bit like "Wait, what's gonna happen to X? What happened to Y?" I think that's just because this show goes through characters so quickly.

Additionally, I did not like the side romance LMAO involving Ye-bun's aunt. I thought it was ridiculous and annoying. Sorry not sorry. The problem there was that they made her character so unlikeable in the beginning and a little bit irritating, and that the actual romance between her and the police captain is unnecessary (in my opinion) and felt like they wanted to beef up her character and the level of world-building in the small town. (You can skip these scenes, as I did. They're super short and feel like filler if anything.) They made her a "supporting character" but you honestly didn't need to make her life revolve around romance of all things.

I'm only halfway through the drama but so far I'm finding it fairly good. It's not overly amazing or anything, but it doesn't have to be, it only has to be watchable to be enjoyable in my opinion and I love the consistent humour and brewing love triangle. I will admit I got bored around Episode 6 but only because there was a much greater shift in tone from the "comedy" that felt like I was watching a completely different show. I'll give Episode 7 a try and see if it improves.

Acting:

I think everyone's acting is pretty on par with their characters. Suho, former EXO member, has had a few main lead roles here and there but you can tell he's fairly new in terms of creating an elusive character like Sun Woo, who is always with a smile and a quiet mind. Especially because his previous dramas haven't received that high ratings. His character is a complete contrast to the other male lead, which I think he does greatly with his mannerisms and pale expression. Han Ji Min plays Ye-bun with a smiley face and dramatic fashion. I think there were some scenes where I wasn't too sure about whether she had the "right" expression or not. But that might also be due to the comedy element of this show. She's energetic, whiny and a great character with a distinctness to her that separates her from the likes of other female characters.

As for Lee Min Ki, who plays Jang-yeol, he has an extremely tired face, but a definitive attractiveness and certain "arrogance" to his expression that helps capture Jang-yeol's personality in terms of his dynamic with Ye-bun.

Scriptwise, I understand they were working with what they were given. Imagine opening up the script to see you have to be fondling the rear end of your co-star. I'd be howling. Anyway yeah, sometimes the script felt like it wasn't for the same show. It just seemed to be flat at times but also nothing really... nuanced or hard-hitting. Sometimes you need a script that actually makes the scenes memorable, but because of how quick things go, it just feels like one thing after another.

Music:

I love the music in this drama! In fact, that's what got me hooked after the first episode really. The OST is modern and upbeat, which greatly emulates the youthful themes of the drama but also the correlation of the main leads' dynamic.

Here is the link to the playlist: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/4Wx4aY3oPM6Z3CGH9u5IHL?si=ca6ee3e44c184347

Rewatch Value:

Possibly a 6/10. I imagine that once we have those big grand reveals towards the end of the drama in terms of who is good/bad, who is doing what etc. then the drama feels a bit obsolete if you know what has happened. However, this drama sustains itself because of how strongly developed the personalities are as well as the tons of things going on in each episode.

Usually, the showrunners think that having plenty of plot is what keeps the audience engaged, but they always compound it too quickly and make it hard to differentiate or process the events. Behind Your Touch manages to avoid this problem. As the scenes don't drag on for too long which makes you kinda forget stuff that has already happened.

Overall:

I'm not going to try and sell this drama as more than what it is. But it is really a funny yet interesting watch. I did get a bit... bored by Episode 6. Only because there was a shift in tone due to the plot. I don't think it's the best thing yet because the balance between comedy and thriller is a fine line that can't be dragged out and I'm a bit worried that this show might do that.

Interesting storyline

I am loving this drama so far. The only problem is the FML's fake voice, her jumping around like a 3 years old and her UGLY Ass customs! I don't know who decided the make her outfits look like a toddler just scribbled on a paper and the adult thought it was a good idea..... The entire outfit including thr hair style is just plain ugly! I hope as the drama grow, her outfits will be better...

My thoughts, two weeks in

So far My Merry Marriage is much more of a slice-of-life than many of the Kdrama dailies I've watched. It has all the elements other dailies have and that you expect—a central family with a grandma, her middle aged children, and their 20-and-30-year old children; plutocrats who are "just like us"; a mom who abandoned her kid mystery; cohabitation, rich man/poor woman, childhood friends, workplace romance romcom hi-jinks. But it isn't really "about" any single one of those things.

Home for Summer (KBS1, 2019) was "about" adopting a kid. The Second Husband (MBC, 2021) was "about" getting revenge for a murdered grandma and kidnapped baby. The Love in Your Eyes (KBS1, 2022; my favorite daily) was "about" Youngyi falling for the man who got her late husband's eyes through organ donation. Suji and Uri (KBS1, 2024) was "about" kids separated from their moms due to makjang shenanigans, finding their moms, and healing.

But two weeks in, My Merry Marriage doesn't really have a central driving premise so much as it has a group of characters who are all going about doing their best and mostly failing to live their lives. The individual stories they're in are recognizable as what makes up a lot of daily dramas, but so far, they're not driving narrative arcs—Gonghee's an intern contract worker who wants to be hired as permanent employee and become a clothing designer, but the show isn't focused on urban workplace dynamics like Sunny Again Tomorrow (KBS1, 2018) mostly was; Dansoo is a chaebol with a tragic past and sunny, playful, insouciant/cheeky personality whose doting grandma decides he needs to actually earn a living and become an adult, but the drama isn't like Mother of Mine (KBS2, 2019 weekender) where that was a major romantic conflict; the mom, Myungja, has a husband who quit being a cop and hasn't helped financially since and mother who still lives in the country being a farmer, but most of her scenes are devoted to her lifelong competitiveness with her frenemy, Joori.

The bones of a typical daily are there, but My Merry Marriage is interested in all the petty little things that make up our daily lives—rent increases, a mean boss, loneliness, trying to get your siblings to care about an ageing parent, life after divorce, a failing practice; and all the ways we meet that pettiness—crying in despair because no one in your family seems to understand how much you all need money to get to the next day, having a crush on the boss who's nice to you, taking a poetry class, teasing your lifelong crush and being a total brat even though you're traumatized, sad, and scared.

For example, in today's episode (episode 9) after having a fainting spell from seeing blood (which reminded him of the night his father died), Dansoo sits out on the balcony and plays a guitar and sings a song. Gonghee comes out to listen to him and we get a montage of Gyungtae laying back pensively alone in bed, "Audrey" (no doubt Dansoo's mom with amnesia who he thinks abandoned him) alone in her shop, and then back to him signing about a breakup while Gonghee listens to him quietly. That's not a scene from a typical daily! It's too quiet and without an immediate narrative payoff for most dailies. And I love it.

Here are some other things I'm enjoying about the show:

—The frenemy rivalry between Myungja and Joori. Imagine having a frenemy since your high school days and you're now in your fifties with two grown kids! That's a relationship that's been nurtured, lol.

—Dansoo is surprisingly layered for a bratty chaebol, and I confess I thought Park Sang Nam would be a bad actor but he's...good??? He's believable and commits to Dansoo 100%. As for Dansoo as a character, I delight in his floppy haired immature antics, but it's all underscored by how genuinely sweet he is and can be—how he helped Kyungsol when they were abroad and living on the streets, how he helps Gonghee by telling her mom he's a contract employee like her when really he's a full time employee (and also the owner's grandson 🙄), how he pays a year's worth of rent when he hears the Maengs are struggling financially, and how he visits his dad's grave and asks him for courage and help 'cause he's scared.

—I don't know if I enjoy the second leads, but I'm...intrigued by how b*tchy Kang Ji Na is. She is in love with Mingi, but she was so *mean* when she turns down his marriage proposal. I want to know the story there.

—Dansoo's grandma and her secretary. I've always had a soft place for Yang Hee Kyung ever since Dalja's Spring, and she's hilarious here as the chaebol grandma who constantly needs her secretary to remind her to stop coddling her full grown man grandson.

I think the show set out to be a lighthearted healing romcom type drama, and it's pulling it off.

Pretty hot, despite the rain

This may be one of the best BL's of 2023. I enjoyed it from the first second to the last and never did it get boring or uninteresting.

Despite the original fantasy-themed plot, the actual bl-story is quite predictable. That's not a big deal though, since I like to see BL-tropes (well, most of them anyway) and these come with predictability. The rain triggering soulmates ability to communicate while being deaf to everything else is a great find to build on. The MC starts off a bit awkward, but once they start kissing, the chemistry is undeniable for everyone. The way Saengtai looks at Patts during NC scenes is absolute fire. These kisses are hot hot hot.

The synchronicities between Tai's parents relationship and his own are pure realness. So are a lot of other scenes. The slow change in Somfon from his first love and savior to his real heart and feelings is wonderful to see.

I did not care for the sudden outburst of aggressivity in Patts, and it irrtates me that this was not addressed at all. Besides the fact that it came from nowhere and was blind rage, it did not fit the character of Patts so far. He had said he had a temper, but there was never any other outbursts before that. And nobody tells him off for it either. For me this would be an absolute turn-off on a guy, but that's me.

Some of the dialogue is a bit stiff or not toned right. But these are very minor flaws compared to the overall mesmerizing experience of this BL.

I loved the atmosphere, the pace, the theme, the completeness, the family, the NC scenes, the handling of tropes. In some parts it reminded me of TOATS or ITSAY (It not as good as these tho!!). I will put this one high on my re-watchable list.

Better season due to entertainment value, cast and show format

Each time I go into watching dating shows, I go into it to be entertained, to be moved and be engaged by the cast. To me, the show is a real-time evolving narrative where I only get to see an edited final material. Thus I base my opinion on what I have been fed. Although the characters' were cut from the same cloth as those from previous years, their emotions and thoughts were played out more for the audience to see this time around in my opinion. The show's producers signed on individuals that were more vocal, controversial, spirited and immature then put them in almost continuous jarring situations as soon as they arrive, on their first breakfast in Paradise, and as soon as people get back to Inferno. All of which make for jaw-dropping, tearful, infuriating, questionable, frustrating and explosive moments which for viewers like me was entertainment gold.

I admit I came for the train wreck, but I also enjoyed seeing the camaraderie amongst the cast members which came across as genuine amongst some. The pressurized atmosphere was lifted by the occasional display of lighthearted banter. That is another thing this season had shown more of and it was heartwarming.

I recommend you watch Single's Inferno Season 3. Kick it off with a bowl of Bugles with Chex Mix, sit back and enjoy the ride. You may even be compelled to leave a comment, just as I did, for some reason or another. If you judge by the comments, it is quite polarized. Therefore, there is a big chance you come out hating it or loving it. Nonetheless, I wish you happy viewing!

Trash TV at its worst

OK y'all, let's cut to the chase, shall we?
This show is trash. And I mean it, real trash. Utter trash. I'd say "pure trash" but "pure" ain't the kind of adjective one can in all fairness use to describe this, sorry.
I know there are millions of people who'll disagree, what can I say, good for them, but in my review I can only share *my* opinion, so bear with it. If you adored the original show and think that Kitano Takeshi's a freaking genious, by all means, watch this, you're gonna love it.
But if you, instead, always considered the original 80's show a disgrace only useful to those "gaijin" who *love* to diss Japan day in and day out ('cause, hey, "them Japs are all weirdos" as this show "showed") and if you think that the only real weirdo is Kitano (hey, I dunno him personally, he might be the best guy in the world....but in my book, if you look like you're demented, speak like you're demented, behave like you're demented and produce stuff that seems like it's been written by someone who's demented, well...chances are you might be demented, sorry)...well, in that case steer clear of this and watch something less trashy. "Sasuke", for example.

Good first half, then dwindled in the 2nd

Boy oh boy! How excited I was when they announced a 3rd season because I really loved this show and It never ceases to amaze me, but then something started feeling off about it.

This season really had me in the first half, It was super perfect, I'm squealing like crazy episode after episode, I love how they tried to switch up things to make it interesting and not to make like repetitive, though I don't mind if they kept the same set up like in season 1 since the hard carry will always be the people that they will bring in.

As I said in my review for Season 2, I wish this show is longer than it is, like you could stretch this into a full-on kdrama runtime, like the standard 16 episodes a season, I even said in my season 2 review that it could go up to 20 episodes with all the boring talking included and I would still eat that shit up. The way it is, 9 to 11 episodes are great, it's fast, and you're on your toes every episode, but once you get invested in these people, you'll start to feel like "I wish I could learn more about these people, cuz these guys seemed to be interesting to know with". You can tell though that this season had a lot to show, based on the way things are moving and some interactions weren't even delved deeper that much, it looked like they had to cut out a lot, mind you, it's already 11 episodes which is like 2 episodes more than season 1, but it felt like I haven't even got to know half of the participants well enough.

And like I said in the beginning, this got me in the first half only, I didn't drop it or anything, I managed to finish it, but it took me a while even though it should've taken me only 1-2days max because, around the second half when they added the last female participant, things started dwindling. It's not Single's Inferno without a participant having a harem because this girl also got interested in this one male participant who already has 2 girls going after him. Now, I don't really mind that as long as it makes things interesting and doesn't overshadow other participants, but then the people behind this decided to make it the main thing of the show, it's a good drama, but I also wanna watch others. It felt like because of that some participants weren't able to shine, it's almost like they got ignored post-production, like background characters you're supposed to ignore, and to me, it looked like they were boring people, though one of them did fucked up in the paradise date, oooofff!

Dex being one of the panelists this season is interesting, to see and hear his opinions as someone who also went through the same struggle is good, I already saw some articles that they're doing it for the next season as well and it's my girl Hajeong, so happy for her.

So yeah, good season, it started off really strong, but yeah... fell off because of some imbalances with what to highlight, still interesting nonetheless. I still think season 2 is the best season.

Not as bad as many say

I know many have given very bad reviews for this drama. But after reconsidering my first impression, I would say if you fast forward certain cliche scenes where female lead ,her mother and her grandmother Flex their super powers you might very well able to enjoy this drama. This is not a sequel but a spin of mind you. I wish they um did not go to far showing superpowers off call the ladies. As it only added to cring. If they had
Toned down the showcasing of superpowers of female lead,Her mother and her grandmother. This would have been very much enjoyable as The original strong woman though bong soon. I must say few lines about Villain played by Woo Seok in this drama. I know he did very bad thing . But i kept thinking he was not like that from birth but the environment he grew up made him like that so even if he did evil things,I was feeling pity for him. I did not want so much tragic end for him. I know I should not Feel like that. But what can I do make handsome villains fate like that only in k drama. I was so impressed by the good looking villain that I i'm going to check his past and future works. So all in all just was forward The cringe scenes , and you are good to go.

I never dislike any main actress in Chinese drama that I have watched so far but seriously, Angel Zhao/Zhao Jinmai is not that pretty in reality even when she's dressing up. So actually there's no point for the production team to make her wearing frizzy wig, ugly teeth, because even when she's tryna look pretty, she's actually just an average looking actress. I think it's okay to only maintain the dark skin. Gosh her character is kinda like a psychotic (I mean [duh] look yourself in the mirror first, try to make yourself prettier, smarter by your ownself rather than making that "ask for sympathy", loser and irritating face. In reality, it won't happen. She's ugly, not smart, no charm, character is like a loser, pathetic, psychotic, silly, not being known.....AT FIRST, so it's sooooo ridiculous for Liang YouNian to easily like her, it's nonsense! Who the hell is she to portray her jealousy, show her cold face when other girls adore Nian, she has no right at all to act like He Xin, XiaoYue and other girl is a threat, I feel like giving a mirror to her. Her best friends should tell her to stop daydreaming and work her ass on improving herself before trying to befriend and get close with Nian - this is a good friend should do. The cast for her best friend should change to someone that is slender and cute/pretty unlike in this drama. This is like a bunch of shameless pathetic loser girls (lin xia and miaomiao), Lin Xia should be the one to motivate miao miao to study harder, improve her appearance and character so that miaomiao deserves to have nian as bf whatsoever. He Xin should do the same too, why on earth she's match making and trying so hard to make her cousin to get close with that nobody at first, pfffttttttt, so nonsense! Xia MiaoMiao looks so sloopy, smelly, and her hair looks like having a flea on it...even after she took off her braces, wore skincare product. I keep on watching this drama only because of im a fan of Lai Kuanlin and i have no problem with other casts, i just hate so much the role of xia miao miao. I believe there are more cuter young chinese actresses. why choose angel zhao, haihhhhhh spoiled my mood. If you have watched Crazy Little Thing Called Love - thailand 2010 movie, the main actress looks wayyyyyyyyyyyy better, you won't get annoyed looking at her but as for this angel zhao, seriously....she's not that pretty so no need to overdo it with frizzy curl dry got flea looking hair, smelly looking, ugly teeth, dark skin... just maintain her original look with the characters of the role, then it logically make sense on why the guy can fall for the girl... and not being a fairytale story. Or maybe maintain the look of xia miao miao in this story but with better attitude (smart, diligent, no time to fall for guys, don't mind cannot make friends because live in her own world blah3) and it make sense too if Nian falls for her. I mean, who the hell will naturally like and adore a human being like Xia Miao Miao. RIDICULOUS!!!! Plus, they don't look compatible and suit to be together at all, and other support roles looks overshadow angel zhao look. Elkie/Zhu Jintong should actually get the role for xia miao miao, they look better.
Hope in future there will be no stupid role like this.

Not worth it

Unfortunately this show fell really flat for me. I was really excited about the cast and there were characters I loved, but the pacing was terrible and all the awkward moments between ML and FL were too cringe. The soundtrack was also terrible. one of the songs sounded like Rick Astley’s “Never gonna give you up, never gonna let you down”. So I was constantly getting rickrolled every episode. The other musical choices were equally as bizarre.

I wish there had been better communication between the ML and FL. He was barely ever saying anything useful and always leaving her hanging. It seemed toxic.

The best friend gave terrible advice. And then how weird was it she didn’t even tell ShuYi she was in a relationship with Guan Ji when she knew every detail about SY’s relationship with Shi Yan?

Basically I watched the entire series hoping it would get better and it just never did.

It's an entertaining despite what others said

Entertaining drama. Okay nmn ang drama but of course Strong woman dobong soon is so much better. But it doesn't mean na iignore niyo ang drama nato. Kung hindi ka nmn mapili sa drama at gusto mo ng lighthearted at happy ending watch this.
- It's still enjoyable, I like this as comedic
- The lead chemistry(Namsoon and Hee Shik) is okay lang not great pero okay lang kase hindi talga focus masyado
- I like some of the cast and the acting seems good, I like the elders here in this drama
- C grandma at barista ang lalandi lagi 😁 umay haha, the parents are still care or in love despite divorce
- I love it na may guest appearance sina Kim Won Hae(yung bakla na may gusto ky min hyuk at nasa gang na laging bugbog sa hospital sa strong woman do bong soon), Park Hyung Sik
(Min Hyuk), at Park Bo Young(Do Bong Soon) :) - iba talga yung tawa ko sa strong woman do bongsoon parin.
- I like the team up of Namsoon kasama yung dalawang homeless friend nya (Hyun Soo at c No) nakakaaliw sila kaso ang konti lang
- I don't agree that Ryu Si-o should be forgiven like some said. Lol kahit na handsome sya or may soft spot kay Namsoon sa paningin ng iba masama parin ugali niya, marami pinatay, at di nagbago kaya deserve mapanagot. Kakaawa mga pinatay nya walang redemption arc is better. Mas kawawa pa c Hwa Ja/Myung Hee kesa sa kanya.
- I stille enjoy this drama kahit na medyo messy, not much ganap, still I find this lighthearted and okay
