This is Something Special

Being one of those people who watches multiple shows that happen to air on the same day, I've had to pick and choose which to watch live and which the binge later.

This one was a binger, and I'm so glad it was!

Don't get me wrong, I like a BL that's set at a university/high school/whatever and has hesitations of starting/maintaining the relationship and all that stuff, but "Last Twilight" is a whole other caliber and I REALLY hope that more of these types of BLs get made because WOW!!!!!

First off, they aren't university students at all. Ok, one of them sort of is(Day's on a break due his deteriorating sight), but we never see him in class/studying on campus or whatever. They are adults, with adult problems that adults can identify with--and not just blindness.

Right off the bat I can see that the actors and production team did their research. I knew going into this series that Sea has good eyesight, but if I didn't, I would have Googled several times to make sure, because Day actually appears blind. Every movement, every facial expression, and the way he never looks anyone in the eye the way seeing people do was a masterful performance. All Day wants is to get his sight back, even after he appears to come to terms with it, and that desire screams from every minute of Sea's performance.

Jimmy is someone I loved from "Bad Buddy", so I was ubber happy that is was one of the leads here. It's made very clear from the first minutes of the first episode that Mhok is a working adult with a rough kind of life. He's another one of those actors(along with Sea) who can portray emotions so authentically, that I was a bawling mess every time he broke down, both when his sister died while he was in jail and during the breakup. Mhok was so also caring and sweet when it came to Day, even when literally dragging him out of his room.

Jimmy and Sea need to do more work together, and not just as a couple, because they are phenomenal scene partners.

I've said this in other reviews, so pardon to repeat, but one of the cliches I don't like in BL is the bitchy girls and the girls who try to break the relationship apart--sometimes those are two different roles played by two different girls. This series none of that. Film and Namtan as Gee and Pojai are warm and supportive and a positive light on the series. I adore how Gee is so positive and accepting of Day when she sees him again, and I love that Pojai and Mhok are just friends without any underlying agenda.

It was also nice to see that it wasn't a girl in the middle, but a boy. And that boy was August, Day's former badminton partner. Here again, the series dodged cliche, and instead of making August a total douche, they made him sympathetic enough that even when he kissed Day just to make him happy, you still felt bad for him. At least, I did. I wanted to hug August when he told Mhok that he tried but really can't see Day as anything but a friend. Credit goes in no small part to Ohm, who I haven't seen since "A Boss and A Babe", who took a character who could have been a throwaway cliche who we hated to someone that I actually felt bad for(see hug comment above).

Mark was another fantastic surprise for me. I liked him in "Bad Buddy", and I liked him in "Only Friends" but this time he played a character type that I've never seen him play before and it was phenomenal! Mark and Sea look like brothers so to see them in scenes together as Night and Day was deliciously authentic. Night's guilt over Day's condition and his attempts to make it up to his brother hurt so much to watch and I couldn't help but breathe a sigh of relief when they finally started talking to each other. Mark knows how to play guilt without being overt about it and he knows how to portray relief the same way. I'd like to see him play more characters like this. Also, Night and Porjai ending up together is so cute could die.

Watch this series squeal and cry and fall in love just like I did.

Also, I just ordered the Box Set, which should tell you something about just how great this series is.

Why?

So I Gotta say it was amazing
The chemistry between Mhok and Day was so good and they were so cute but for me the time skip in the last episodes were completely unnecessary! Tbh I was never a fan of time skips, I really don’t like them. Day breaking up with Mhok was very random, instead of a time skip, they should have talked it out or atleast stay In contact with each other. I can’t really like the fact that they haven’t talked for straight up 3 years. Was the job as cook really that necessary? I don’t think so, like in the end Mhok didn’t take the plane back as if it wasn’t important to keep the Job. Without the time skip I would rate this series a 100/10 but It was really random and I didn’t enjoyed it so just a 9/10.
I just talked about the bad things right now sorry, this series is still an amazing BL! All in all, the characters, acting, visuals, story(except the end lol) was full of beauty❤️❤️ I wish for another JimmySea series❤️

i'd watch any series with those two leads blindly !

I've watched vice versa before ,that's why i have decided that i'd watch this ,they're both so talented.
this drama is worth watching, though some reasoning is weak , "drama logic" of the background of mohk Character but jimmy absolutely did a great job that they broke my heart at one point, burst into tears at some moments fell in love and felt happy for them and that's how you know it was a good drama when they play your emotions and change your mood
One thing is worth applauding is how mature the Character were .
felt so good to have watched it definitely recommended.

Um bom começo de um longo percurso

(+ +)

*
De modo geral, a história é cativante e envolvente!

Don’t let people’s opinions on the last two episodes stop you

I avoided watching this for a long time because I had read so many negative comments about the last two episodes, which is where a lot of actual issue resolution is handled. Ahead of those two, it was a mostly straightforward plot - meaningful and beautifully executed, but still a relatively simple plot. I actually think they could have expanded this to 16 episodes to really handle the issue resolution pieces better, but it is what it is. It’s a great show. It’s a more mature theme than other BLs. Don’t let the hype on the last two episodes keep you away - they aren’t bad. Without them, they would have left some pretty large (adult) plot issues unresolved. They aren’t handled *great* as-is, but at least they weren’t ignored.

Best BL of 2023 and one of my all time favourite BLs. These two actors are of a different league. I appreciate BL shows that focus on real important and overlooked issues in society, educating viewers and helping us be more thoughtful and kinder to others in general. BLs that make me sob like a baby get a plus point. Great writing paired with flawless execution and perfect cast made this series one of the best of all time.

Extremely offensive ableist ending that completely undercut the main point of the show. I genuinely am still shocked about it months later. Everyone who was involved with the decision to cure the blindness of the main character in the 11th hour (in a show that, to varying success levels admittedly, had actually seemed to be trying to portray how full and beautiful life can be while living with a disability) should be ashamed of themselves. I am haunted every day knowing how many people watched this show excited for the representation for it to only do that in the final act. Shameful, genuinely. Wish I could rate it lower.

Let’s talk about Mhok

As this series highlights on Day’s life, I hope this review gives some insight on Mhok’s characters and my brief thoughts on episode 12 (spoiler-free).

From what I gathered throughout the episodes, the Last Twilight is not only the story of a blind man (Day) who feared of society’s perception because he was once a beloved national athlete.
This is also the story of an orphan (Mhok) who struggled to integrate back into the society because he was once a convict with unresolved trauma.

I would like to commend on Mhok for his love, support, commitment and devotion in Day's day-to-day life. He rebuilds Day’s confidence (like a mechanic) and helping Day to face the outside world, once again as a blind man.

Since the series begins with Mhok’s flawed and woeful past, I feel this series should ends with Mhok redeems himself by forgiving himself over his past.
Mhok is a person who tries his best for others despite being too tough on himself. He is a person with tough exterior but also with insecurities which mainly kept to himself - e.g: how society treated him as a convict, trauma over the lost of family member, power imbalance and social status between him and Day, the feeling of inferiority with his capability to provide and care for Day.
Mhok’s issues should be explored on later episodes, however this can only happen - if and only if Day reciprocates by trying to understand where Mhok’s insecurities stem from.
Maybe an extra episode to explore this will be suffice?

In my opinion, this series should ends with a relatable yet heartfelt lesson of how these two unfortunate characters heal their relationship. And also for Mhok to absolve himself over his past, giving himself the closure he needed the most.
[note of reference: Moonlight Chicken (2023) explored the complexity of different characters overcoming the loss of loved ones and going through phases of denial, grief, healing and acceptance - e.g.: ideally the relationship of Alan and Wen, Jim and Beam, Gaipa and his mom/ Jim].

About the second half of episode 12, perhaps the screenwriter and director were hoping to dedicate this part to a specific audience - e.g.: the blind community.
This might be why episode 12 has a fairytale-like ending, where there might be a chance in life that the intended audience could once see again.
Nonetheless the cinematography, soundtrack and locations chosen for this series are equally pleasing and beautiful.

A near perfect bl that suffered from bad finale syndrome

Episodes 1-9 were some of the best episodes in a bl I've ever seen and I binged them so quickly, but I felt myself struggling to watch 10-12. It was as if the writers forgot what made this series so special and even the key qualities that made the characters who they were, taking away any of their development. The whole story was about how Day was normal (and how people with disabilities are normal) but in a monologue in the finale he talks about someone blind not being normal? I genuinely don't think Day should have gotten the surgery because it erased his growth throughout the series and felt slightly disrespectful. Mhok was an amazing character, probably one of my favorite characters in any bl, but in the finale it was like he was a completely different person. I am also just not a fan of time skips especially if they are just there because the writers couldn't figure out how to end a series. I was pleasantly surprised with Night's journey throughout the show. At first I really didn't like Night but he quickly became my favorite (especially after they ruined Mhok). Night isn't a typical character that I would like (considering he's not queer and you don't see much of him) but I related so much to him. I can relate to that feeling of when you make a huge mistake but don't know how to fix it, and when you try to fix it, it just makes it worse and worse to the point that you feel like you can't do anything correctly. When Night cried because they acknowledge his favorite food it really got me because something as small as that was so moving to him because of how neglected he was feeling in his family. Overall a good series and JimmySea were amazing (my first series I've seen from them but their chemistry was great!). And at the end of the day, the only reason I feel so strongly about the bad final episodes is because of my love for the first 9 in the series.
