Where's the story?

I was expecting a lot for this movie but., I was
just disappointed. If you really focus you'll find that there is no storyline. It's just about a female killer who is the top of her company who manages contracts killing, then one day she is the one to be killed. I was imagining that trying to kill booksoon would've been more thrilling and would have given scenes where they are tracking her, making groups to chase her,...etc.. but no, in one scene "the trying to kill book soon" is gone.
I think this movie is overrated
Sorry for those who liked it. It's just my opinion

Korea doesn't have too many female action fighters who's not stereotyped so when I saw the preview of this I decided to watch it.

I was thinking of a female version of John Wick and I read another review who thought the same, lol.

Aside from the slow action scenes this movie didn't have too much to go on. Yes we learn there's a company called MK but you don't know what's it about. You have men sitting at a table but you don't know who they are. There's no backstory about what this company is about. There were backstories of Bok Soon but what was the point of some of those back stories?

Then there's stuff that could've been left out such as the semi sex, lesbo, and small incest scenes. Didn't need to see any of that.

My main gripe has to do with the last part of the movie. It went down like a wimp.

This is why I don't care for Korean movies. It seems like they stuff a whole lot of fluff in a two hour movie but just completely rush the ending leaving questions to be answered. Definitely not the kind of movie I like to watch.

the story is disappointing

to be honest the movie is great for doing edits and for draw / reference it was amazing only in the casting and the shooting they put time in effort and that's it .... Okay, the relationship between the boss and the sister is wired enough specifically to the Sean when she feels sexual towards him and kisses him directly like excuse me .... and the relationship between the main character and the guy who's have a sike father it starts cute but then get killed that fast okay it may be a good plot but not necessarily many points it wasn't to be add and they could develop the story even better but after all this is my review

Very over-rated. The movie seems to have one theme that it repeats over and over again: Assassins are people with ordinary issues. Yawn. It is not as original and definitely not as clever as the writer, director, and actors seemed to think it is. Much of the humor and all of the potential shock value from the multiple violent scenes fall flat because there is no compelling story and little character development. I never thought that a movie about a bunch of assassins could be this boring!

I thought this film would emphasize the hardships of a mother who lived a double life as a killer and mother, but it turns out to be more of a John Wick wannabe.

I did enjoy it tho, and I didn't really think much about anything while I watched this, so I can ignore how the action sequence was fun but stiff and unconvincing at times and just enjoy the star power this film has. It's exciting to see Haeng-seon imo now has a real daughter, then the charismatic Sol Kyung-Gyu, Lee Jae-Wook ahjussi, and other popular actors that I forget where I saw them before.

Did Not Like the Ending

This was a fairly good action/drama film. It was a solid 8 for me until the ending. I just don't like the way the movie ended. Drops this down to a 6 rating. The last fight scene was sub par at best and I do understand why they did that but NOPE! I hated it. I needed a better fight scene between the 2 leads. The movie is 2 hours and 20 minutes and there are things they should have cut and things that could have been added. Specifically what could have been added was a conversation between Bok Soon and the other CEOs in the assassin business. Especially, after they were starting to question the leader of MK.

The highlight of the film is the cast. Pretty stacked too with some of my favorites in small parts. Looking at you Kim Sung Oh. FL Jeon Do Yeon is oustanding. This is the first thing I've seen her it. She was great as Bok Soon. Lee Yeon was really good here too as the new recruit.

Totally worth the watch at least once though.

7/16/23.

Kill Time

What a captivating start!
Jeon Do Yeon surprised me with her fighting skills and her dual identity, a top-notch killer and a single mom. It's quite a contrast from her role in "Crash Course in Romance," where she played a kind aunt. Not that she's unkind here; I found her character to be very human, despite all the victims she's dealt with.

The plot was decent; I wasn't bored, but I didn't feel fully immersed either.
It felt like we were watching two separate stories—the one about the MK organization and Boksoon dealing with her teenage daughter.
However, the ending felt a bit lacking😐. There were many loose ends about MK that were left unresolved, and I doubt there will be a season 2, not that it's really necessary.

I enjoyed the fighting scenes, even if I've seen better.🪓🗡
Overall, I liked the whole cast, and there were many actors that I missed seeing. The production was solid, making it a fine movie to kill time with.

It needed to explore other aspects of a relationship. I was more interested in the daughter story and the killer thinking he was rank A than Bok-Soon. It was hard to understand why she was doing what she was doing and how she ended up there.
The action scenes are the reason I stayed especially the last one which shows all the scenarios thinking it was real but wasn't. The ending ruined it as I wanted an honest conversation between them so there are shields but I got deflated.
It could've done so much better as I wanted more character and their development in the movie

enjoyed this, won't say it was perfect. but it was fun & don't get anyone trying to compare this to Bullet Train, John Wick, Hitman's Bodyguard, Kingsman etc... cause this wasn't trying to be those movies.

what i really loved here was the personal relationships between the character's. even though this tagged action, everyone (who's criticizing this) seemed to forget this also a drama. i loved those aspects of this movie. the mother daughter dynamic was spot on, great acting by all, but Jeon Do Yeon is really talented, have seen her in quite a few movies, so versatile. also loved the new young cast, the intern & the daughter - their story was also very relatable n engaging (in the intern case even less of a story and yet very endearing character IMHO).

i aint into action movies, so don't care for the fight choreography, but even i noticed that it wasn't that mind-blowing (not that there weren't entertaining fight scenes) but on a whole, it was nothing out of the ordinary. and here i think the trailer did a disservice to the movie, selling it as the actions movies i mentioned above.

also there's NO incest to speak off, yeah Min Hee crazy n very possessive of her brother (& lacking a back story, got no way to back my thoughts) but from my POV, Min Kyu didn't treat his sister as anything by a needy, spoilt child - he suffered n indulged her, didn't lust after her! the one he truly loved was Gil Bok Soon. from the 1st moment they met, he was hooked, that's why he did everything he did - for her, until the end in-spite of her going against his instruction's (what she did to his sister) he still didn't want to kill her (basically letting her win).
it wasn't perfect & i can be nitpicky, find potholes but on a whole this was a fun watch. i would rewatch this just for the fun off it anytime...

No thoughts, just vibes

The moment I saw my girl Esom on the cast list, I knew I was in for some freaky shit I didn't know I wanted or needed, but suddenly its 2 AM and I'm clutching my pillow close to my face, giggling like a farting baby

Look, whoever is taking this movie so (sooooo) seriously needs to chill out. Writing wise, it's half-baked at best. Plot lines unresolved, random incest that has zero explanation, purpose or need, murky motivations and a narrative style that I personally enjoyed, but ultimately understand did nothing for the plot. And yet, I thoroughly, massively, obsessively enjoyed it. You know why?

It has got some KILLER vibes, you guys. Like, hahaha, I guess that's a pun, but no seriously. The dialogue delivery is A1, the direction and cinematography was incredible, and my KRYPTONITE trope: yearning. Pining. Longing. All that good stuff, all rolled into one dynamic that had me salivating.

Kill/Gil Bok Soon as a character was perfect too, and I guess her daughter was okay, too. I like the way the mother-daughter tension was handled, and while I got frustrated at the way Bok Soon sometimes handled her child, I also understood that it comes from a place of trauma, where you want to understand and support your child but you have no clue how. I really enjoyed how Bok Soon battled personal demons not when spilling blood, but at the thought of exposing her daughter to the brutality that plagues her daily life. I found that a really striking reflection of how generational trauma manifests in a parent-child relationship, where you have so much to hide from your child because you want to protect them but ultimately make decisions that end up pushing them away. I'm glad that the movie spent time on that because I could not give less of a crap about her "event planning"- I knew what I signed up for.

Of course, be warned that the movie will unecessarily raise questions that they do not even, for a fly's blink of a nanosecond, begin to address. The first two times you will be confused but will reassure yourself that over 60% of the movie is left. Over time, when you throw hands at the tenth question the movie will tease you into wondering (that you never even thought in the first place! But now it's in your head and it's a plot hole!) you will realise the movie is over and you're done :/

Gratifying, it is not.

Overall: Watch it for the vibes, which is what I did, and you will love this movie to bits!

Slick like John Wick

If John Wick was a woman, her name would be Gil Bok Soon. I quite enjoyed this movie. I just love stories with strong, exceptional women who can kick ass!

This movie is bloody, but the cinematography is exquisitely slick. On the surface, it is about an assassin and the organization that she works for -- similar to the John Wick franchise's world-building of assassin factions/orders with hierarchy and sets of rules. The main character, aptly nicknamed 'Kill Bok Soon' is a highly skilled assassin and at the top of her field - you can see this by what her colleagues have to say about her, both in admiration and jealousy.

The real story (IMO) is Bok Soon's relationship with her daughter and her attempts to understand her as a blossoming young adult. Even though Bok Soon is successful in her field both financially and skill-wise, her role as a mother is an alien concept to her. Her ability to read people and predict their next move just doesn't work on her daughter. Although it is shown as more of a 'side story' (probably due to the time constraints of movie form), you can read between the lines. If this were a drama, I'd definitely be interested in watching it.

*The following contains spoiler scenes, DO NOT READ if you don't like spoilers!!*

Personal thoughts on scenes and things of interest:

* scene with Shinichiro Oda, both sitting on the ground and conversing while having a cigarette as if they are long-time friends (before the fight) -- had me giggling

* when she foresees her death while looking in the puddle of water (fight scene with Shinichiro Oda), right before she asks to change her weapon -- scene is somehow funny, surprising (I was like "What? She dies so quickly in the movie??), artistic, and a parody (of the iconic "who am I" scene from Mulan) all at the same time.

* scenes with Lee Jae Wook ❤️❤️❤️, who plays a young version of Cha Min Kyu -- had me smiling literally from ear to ear. What can I say, I'm a fan of his, he is sooo sexy and absolutely magnificent . . . what I would give to [insert daydreams of possibly X-rated wishes and situations with Lee Jae Wook ;P] . . .

* the sex scene with her younger colleague, Han Hee Sung (it's not explicit) -- the expression Hee Sung makes when Bok Soon holds him down and denies his request made me cackle hysterically and then wheeze from being out of breath :D

* Can you believe that Jeon Do Yeon is 50?!?! Wow, I hope I can look that fantastic when I'm her age!! Other than this movie, I have only seen her in Crash Course in Romance and Memories of the Sword - but I can totally see why she is known as a chameleon with her ability to transform into her characters. She looks super cool as Bok Soon, her outfits, her demeanor, her expressions and actions as both an expert assassin and an insecure mother were all top-notch and believable. She is a talented actress indeed.

*when her daughter finally tells her why she hurt the ahole student -- I can't imagine how difficult this was for her character nor how difficult it would be for people IRL. It's not often you see LGBTQ themes in Korean content unless it is BL genre - so it's nice to see it gaining more exposure and provoking empathy and thought (one would hope anyway - NOTE: don't read the comment section of this movie here - it's really shameful to see that bigotry and downright stupidity still exists. . .)

* when Bok Soon confesses that she knew she was in the wrong regarding her initial reaction upon learning that her daughter prefers women -- I like that she admitted it, brief moment but poignant. It's an idea and thought process that could have been expanded upon if it was in a series rather than a movie.

* when Bok Soon tells Cha Min Kyu she knows that SHE is his weakness - made me wonder how long she knew this fact; did she ever have romantic feelings for him?; were they ever an item and/or is it possible that he is the father of her daughter??

Negatives:

* would be even better as a drama since there were several questions left unanswered

* characters could have been more developed (downfall of a movie structure)

* Cha Min Hee's character was confusing. It is stated that she is Cha Min Kyu's younger sister, but the way she was portrayed seemed like she was possessively and obsessively in love with her brother -- gross.

TL;DR: A visually striking movie with a badass female assassin who struggles with being a mom to her adolescent daughter. Beautiful and talented cast members. Highly recommend.
