Fun for mystery-thriller fans, but not a must-watch

To start off, I'm not a fan of horror but I didn't find Monstrous particularly scary. There are a few moments that could be considered jump-scares, but the drama didn't really rely on these for shock value which I appreciate. There are some creepy elements though.

I really liked that each episode was ~30 minutes long. It helped the story move along, but at the same time it didn't feel like it was progressing that much either. Each episode felt similar.

The story isn't anything new nor special. They try to explain how the curse works, but it's a bit glossed over and confusing. Also, I felt like it was more about the family of the lead characters than the mystery / curse.

I thought that Shin Hyunbin would've played a bigger role, so that was a bit disappointing. She still acted well, as did the other actors - solid acting all around from the cast. Personally, I enjoyed Nam Dareum's performance and his character's relationships with his mother and Kwak Doyeon's character, though their story feels very short despite the history of their friendship being shown.

The series could've done more considering they had some great talent. Overall, it's just okay - still enjoyable.

Strong Horror With Tight Plot

Taking a handful of fun, tried-and-true horror tropes, Monstrous delivers a tight plot with engaging characters played by phenomenal actors. I watch a lot of Korean horror dramas and I am constantly disappointed by a lack of logic in terms of the supernatural mechanism. But this show did a wonderful job of setting up the rules of the curse and staying consistent with them throughout. It also had a tension filled closed door plot-line with a great villain. I had a lot of fun.

VFX were laughably terrible though. Luckily they're only used sparingly.

Overall this drama is good, but..

I think the concept of this series was really unique and hard to forget, the cast was amazing and the music was alright (nothing amazing.) The idea of a giant statue head is really unsettling (in a good way), and the conflict between the main lead, monks and the governor was a cool plot, but the drama fell a bit flat on the character side of things. I was really intrigued by the relationship between Yongju and Dokyung as well as his mother, and really only that part of the drama made me want to watch + continue watching it. I think this drama could’ve been much better if it was focused more around their stories as the main plot progressed. This is just my opinion, but the side characters were more likeable than the mains.

Potential spoilers below ? ‼️

I really enjoyed watching Yongju and Dokyung’s dynamic, and as we saw each of the flashbacks the story was slowly unraveling, but their story then abruptly stopped? I was so disappointed in the ending because it was so open, it felt like it had so many holes in it. Is Yongju alive? What happened to him? Where is Dokyung? How is he doing now? How is his relationship with his mother? Did he and Yongju make up afterwards?

Of course, open endings can be good if done properly, but this was not. It left me with too many questions, and an unsavoury taste in my mouth. I felt like the ending scenes with the main lead and his wife (I forgot their names lol) dragged on for far too long and then they just timeskipped a year? To then give us a stupid cliffhanger? I didn’t give 2 shits about them finding another statue or whatever, I just wanted to see how all the characters were healing from those traumatic events.. Like at least 60 people were killed in the town, and yet, the main leads a year later just continue as if nothing happened?… ? ridiculous.

Más de lo mismo...

¡Hola, gente!

Unexpectedly boring

After watching the trailer and the first episode. I was very intrigued and interested in the story but it went downhill so badly. Nothing phenomenal happened after the first episode nor there was any revelation till episode 4 which was so boring. I was watching just because of the main male lead who is a very good actor but the acting of the female lead was good to say the least moreover she didn't contribute to anything in the story till episode 4. I know she must be sad and such but there was only flashbacks in her scenes which got boring seriously.

How did they make a show with these types of genres boring?

The only thing truly monstrous in this show is the pacing and how utterly boring it was. I had hope for an entertaining and exciting time, given the cast and genres, and there were moments, but they were ultimately dashed by how unengaging the show was despite the thriller/horror/mystery/survival/ supernatural aspect. Crazy, I know. It would've been better, in my opinion, as a movie. As a 90-minute movie, it could have been thrilling like Train to Busan but it just felt too long even though each episode was around thirty minutes. I know that there are some good reviews on here for it, so some people obviously liked it but it missed the mark for me.
