Weak start

The first episode didn't manage to get me hooked. Not even a little. However, I don't really pay intention to first episodes so I am simply going to overlook it.

I have to give credit for the cinematography though; it was amazing but the slow motion and the background music that was played when they met in the pin place weren't needed.

That being said, I will watch the second episode with the the hope that things will get better.

I guess I'm in the minority...

...but that isn't surprising to me. I absolutely love the cinematography that the director is using. I don't think I have ever watched a historical drama from this era so the setting took me by surprise. I actually enjoy the silences where the actors portray their emotions with their expressions. I don't think the director would get away with it if he didn't have some of the best actors. The only draw back to me is the flashback when the princess and Choong are thinking about each other.

The Beginning

I personally loved the music, but some scenes were really long. I wonder how the story will evolve, it seems like nothing much happened here... but I guess it's only to show the context, and the end of the episode seemed a bit more entertaining.

I AM BLOWN AWAY!!!!

The first thing that struck me about this drama is that it totally does not look like a drama. It looks like a film - an epically gorgeous, mindblowingly beautiful film! The only place I've seen tv that is this stylized and cool is maybe HBO. Oh, wait, there is one other place - White Christmas, which was directed by, surprise, surprise - Kim Yong Soo. The same director behind this glorious visual feast.

I am so sad that the ratings for this in Korea have been poor but I know why. It is just too different. The story is being told almost entirely through the visuals and the dialogue is extremely sparse. But that's what I love. Anyone can tell a story, but it takes a great artist to show it without words. It also takes great acting. And these are great actors at their finest. This directing style would fail utterly without great acting because when the story is not being told by the cinematography it is being told by the actors' expressions.

I just cannot express my appreciation enough of the beauty of this drama. It's like a moving painting created so deftly that words are not needed. I only hope it keeps up this quality & storytelling style because if it does it will be groundbreaking.

:(

What is going on here??? I know its the first episode but come on make it a bit more exciting spent half of the ep with pointless slow motions and background music which does not make bloody sense. Then the main leads just kept looking at each other for what seems like forever. I like the plot but to be honest the first ep did not give me the best first impression. :/
