TharnType 2: 7 Years of I Can’t Even

This was basically fan service. That is not necessarily a bad thing, but...

I don’t get this author's writing and I never will. I don’t understand how she can consistently produce some of my favorite BL couples (AePete) and my least favorite - sometimes in the same series, sometimes in the same couple. It’s exhausting.

I had serious issues with TharnType but I do like MewGulf’s chemistry. It’s not the actors’ fault the story failed them. TT2 did it again, only with kidnapping and abuse instead of rape. *sigh*

TT2 also gave me Champ & Doc whom I adored, and hit us up with 3+ superfluous other couples. Like LBC and LBC2 the pacing in TT2 was uneven, the pairs confusing, and the side dishes with the most chemistry were given the least complexity and screen time. It was ultimately unsatisfying.

More like 7 days.

The characters have not changed at all. Everyone is still so damn toxic to each other. 7 years together and they still don’t trust their partner.

When jealousy becomes the main plot once again, it shows how one-dimensional the love between TharnType actually is.

The only non-toxic characters are P’Cir and Phu. They truly trust each other and it was a true relief whenever they had screen-time. Also the Family of Tharn is very non-toxic. The way they also side with Type — I love it.
The fact that Tharn’s family is so lovingly but then there’s Tharn being toxic af is kinda paradox, but nvm.

If you ship TharnType, then there’s lots of fan-service and probably also why people love it so much.

I never shipped them tho, so I really enjoyed their “breakup”.

Much better than the reviews may make it seem to be!

I'm a bit late to the game of watching TharnType but wanted to leave my thoughts anyways.

First and foremost I personally think that the most important thing to keep in mind when watching all type of drama is that it is fiction. That goes without a say for BL too.

Now I'll continue this review from the standpoint of it being a fictional story and not how true to reality it may be. Some elements tend to have to happen to keep the story going and not to "dry out", so the viewers don't get bored. I think that there's a fine line between too much of these "need to happen" elements and realistic elements and that's where the tricky bit comes to play when making a good storyline.

In the case of TharnType2 the production team managed to keep this balance fairly well. There sure was some questionable scenes and a question mark surrounding communication between the main characters after being together for so long but I find those parts needed to make the whole 12 ep season working. If there wasn't this lack of communication between the main characters, there wouldn't have been much left to develop throughout the series.

My favourite part of the series was when Type decided to get ordained. That's a beautiful way of him trying to console for his parents loss of not being able to grant them grandchildren. (Since I've no experience or knowledge about Buddhism and the process of how to become a monk I'll leave it as this.) And Tharn accepting it without questioning it, waiting for him on the "other side" is just the sweetest.

To the contrary of the good there's one scene that really bugged me. It's the scene when you see the musicians preforming during Thorn's and Am's wedding. The visuals of what the musicians were playing didn't match at all with what I was hearing but at the same time it looked like the musicians actually knew what they were doing. So my question is, is it just that the synchronisation between the recording and the visuals are non-existing or could it have been that no one in the production team had done some research about how it looks like when Pachebell's canon in D is performed by live musicians? (I'm a violist and have played this piece before.)

I really liked the cast so there's not much for me to say about that.

And for the soundtrack I didn't mind it. A wee bit repetitive after a while but nothing much. A cute one.

I enjoyed watching both season 1 and season 2 but think I have to go with season 2 being my favourite. The story felt a bit more thought through and less rough.

This is my first review and English is not my first language so hope you can see past that and make something out of what's said above :)

Loved it

Ignore the negative reviews, this is truly an amazing show. Yes, it has flaws, but so do most shows. I binge watched series 1 and 2 and the special episodes and loved it so much. It's sweet, funny, sometimes over the top, the relationships are interesting and often heart warming and lastly: who doesn't love a real happy ending!
The music is good, there is real kissing and some steamy scenes and the main couple has great chemistry.
The couple goes through ups and downs but in the end walk down the aisle, still very much in love. Watch it!

Not a bad sequel!

Story / Plot and Cast: The story has been a continuation from season 1, simply titled TharnType the Series. With the series putting the incidents 7 years after the first season, it is inevitable to look at the projected changes. In general, timing, ages, growth of characters, and communication style are all consistent. The “couples” have, in general, adequate screen time, but they are discussed later. The plot is general and basic (of course!), with only minor twists from the normal storyline. The last part about ordination was really culturally embedded, and occasionally left me in a grin. But, hey, it’s meant to be serious! Let’s talk about the “couples”, shall we:

Tharn and Type: They have significantly improved communication in this series! (Not sure if that is, in fact, common in couples together for seven years.) Communication problems have been severe in season 1, and all that was distressing and aggravating. They weren’t free of communication problems, but certainly less aggravating and face-palming as last time. They have trust issues (again not sure if that is frequent in reality!) but are able to resolve them in the end. More sweet scenes this time, and I’m for it, even though I wasn’t particularly into them. Type was significantly less hot-headed than season 1, improved for so much that he let Fiat infiltrate into his own relationship (!). We need no more elaboration on Mew (Tharn) and Gulf (Type) because we all know they have been doing an excellent job in portraying the respective characters.

Leo and Fiat: It is good that they were together at the end, even though one may question the intention of Fiat of the sabotaging he did to Type and Tharn. I cannot feel the feeling of Fiat to Leo, despite their intimate behaviour (they slept together!). It is well possible that Fiat (or Leo? or both?) treated that as a brotherly relationship (also known as “Phi-Nong” relationship, exclusively for Thai). There is mixed feelings for Fiat because his experience seems really sad, but such could never justify his sabotage. In the end, whether Fiat stays true to Leo is, regrettably, not so observable from the acting. Ja (Leo) was eye-catching and First (Fiat) adequately gave Fiat the character a complex personality. Ja was also involved in Until We Meet Again, and it is refreshing to see him with a new look!

Champ and Khunpol: Despite a reduction in dangling “couples”, one still remain, and this is Champ and Khunpol. Champ was oblivious, but Khunpol wasn’t obvious either. Champ has not a single idea on Khunpol liking him, and this is occasionally aggravating. Khunpol was apparently a shy boy and has held feelings for Champ for seven years (!), coincidentally (or not?) resonating with the series title. (I have to say that, when Type was bullied by his senior right after Khunpol’s feeling was spotted by Type, I held negative feelings for Khunpol. The music might have also contributed to my faulty perception. The show eventually clarified that Khunpol was crucial in dealing with Type’s senior, but that was another story.) Boat (Champ) has made it to season 2, and Jame (Khunpol) is also refreshing.

Cirrus and Phugun: If the two were already a couple, is the problem of dangling “couples” dissolved? [I wonder.] They were linked to the plot by Phugun, where he is a little brother of Tharn, proving again Tharn really has a lot of non-biological relationships (!). Phugun was a warm and helpful person, and whenever he appears the scene is guaranteed to be warm. Cirrus seems to be an over-protective boyfriend, but later he has proved to us that the over-protection was necessary. Cirrus also has the softer side when he talked with Tharn in Tharn’s room. There was little room for character development, but it’s all we have here. Haii (Cirrus) and Title (Phugun) was cute! All in all, I am looking forward to their next roles, be it together or not.

Music: The soundtracks did not particularly attract me. The main track, ข้างเธอ by Off Chainon, was a nice song. What the song gave me is a feeling of grand, beautifully decorated hall which is just made for a nice wedding, which is perfect for the theme of the series. The ending theme, เธอ... ที่เดินเข้ามา by Nuengthida Sophon was lovey-dovey, and did not really attract me. Other songs were mostly the extension of the frequent melodies which appeared in the series intermittently, and may worth your time listening.

To conclude, I would rate the show as mediocre to good. Improved communication and a fairly interesting plot is the good side, but screen time imbalance may be detrimental. As a sequel that is based on the success of season 1, it is not a bad show to watch.

It was good. But... Way more fanservice.

Not nearly as compelling a story as season 1. In season one, stuff was ROUGH. But it made sense. Not everything in season 2 did.

There is a trend I've noticed in Bl dramas. Whoever the "problem child" of the main couple is in season 1, is the one who is in the right in season 2. And this trend follows here, but admittedly with a bit better (read more complex) reasoning behind it. Even so, it's an annoying trend because they usually devolve the character, who is otherwise normally a at least somewhat sensible or upstanding a character in order to accomplish it. No exception this time on that count.

The acting between the main characters is still VERY solid. And their more dramatic performances are balanced by some really cool, soft, romance between Tharn and Type. And overall their relationship is a lot more stable, as you might expect it to be after several years.

And Tharn and Type are bracketed by some wonderful and funny support characters. Especially Mild. He was hilarious from start to stop. I nearly fell out of my seat at his "Oh no, here we go again." shtick regarding Type's tendency to live up to that old adage "When the going gets tough the tough go deep cover CIA levels of clandestine entrapment".

Which leads right into one of my pet peeves in many genres of TV or movies but especially BL's. The lack of holding the "problem instigator" responsible for his/her actions in any meaningful way. In season 2, there are several "bad guys". But the main villain who sows dissent gets his own happy ending because even though Fiat caused enormous pain through selfish, clearly immoral (verging on illegal) actions, he's seen as too young to be held accountable. The real reason is Fiat's bound for his own spin off. So fuck that. Nope. Sorry. He was an adult, and was doing adult manipulation and asshattery. He should have faced some adult consequences.

All the same, it was nice to see the whole gang together again, even if I did feel the drama in season 2 hinged on devolving Tharn's character in order to shoe-horn certain aspects of the plot.

On a technical side? The settings were more artsy and dramatic and the sex scenes even more "adult". It was clearly fanservice. Which, how you view that will depend on how you feel about fanservice to begin with. I am not always a supporter of it. I'd often rather just have a decent story.

Type's problem with his boss and said boss' workplace misdeeds was a nice side story that introduced it's own stresses for Tharn and Type's relationship and THIS was the well done part because this felt like mature relationship stresses to me. This felt like the better, more them, story.

The actress who played aged up Thanya was brilliant and lovely, and she brought a delightful feminine savvy to the plot. But the character of Thorn was a bit odd this time around. I think his behavior was written to be reflexive sibling protectiveness but came across as "nope! Tharn you aren't going through this shit again! You are my child and I will protect you." Seriously, weirdly Tiger-mom Thorn! And haha! Thanya's character was all like "Thorn, honey, sweetie. Shut up and let me handle this".

Then came Type's family scenes. I was left wondering how the very smart Type came from such an idiot sire. But that's part of the fun of Type's family, I suppose. Also, Buddhism for the win! Gulf was so weirdly cute at temple.

In the end, watch it just to see more of the characters you love. Do NOT watch it because you need more of Season 1 Tharn handling Type's ups and downs with the patience of a saint. This is, in its own way, as bumpy a ride as season 1 it just feels like they actually covered less ground because it was, over all, very out of character of Tharn. And that's probably my biggest complaint about it.

But, that being said, it did lead them straight into their special EP that was their wedding.

Saved By Second Couples

STORY:
After the disaster that was TharnType I was hesitant to watch season 2 due to the toxic nature of Tharn and Type's relationship. The saving grace of the story are the two secondary couples Leo/Fiat and Champ/Dr. Khunpol.

The story is pretty basic it takes place 7 years after TharnType where Tharn is now working as a producer and Type is doing is medical residency at a hospital. The only difference is this time instead of Tharn's ex coming into play we get Fiat who is a college kid who falls in love with Type and tries to steal him away from Tharn. I will get more into that below when I talk about Leo/Fiat's relationship.
============================================
ACTING/CAST
Mew as Tharn - Oh Tharn how in 7 years have you shown no interest in growing as a person. Tharn is still a horny adult who constantly wants to have sex with Type. I feel like this show would have made more sense if it was directly after college but to move on 7 years and you are still acting like a 19 year old made me cringe.

Gulf as Type - Thank goodness Type showed a bit of growth from the first season. He's no longer as homophobic as he was before but he's still an idiot with a God Complex. He is selfish and only thinks about himself and his needs throwing what Tharn wants out the window. I wonder sometimes if Type really loves Tharn or if he's with him becuase Tharn is rich.

First as Fiat - This was the first show I saw First in and I have to say he has a great future ahead of him. I am writing this with a bit of a biased opinion because I've already seen Don't Say No and while you are supposed to hate Fiat in this show I urge you to keep and open mind and watch Don't Say No before you form an opinion on him. His backstory is tragic and I'm so happy it is fully explained in their own drama.

Ja Phachara as Leo - Leo on the other hand is more of a side character in this show. He's there more as a friend than lover for half the show but trust me when I say once he and Fiat get their shit together it's so worth it.

Boat as Champ - Our dumb jock from season 1 got his own story line finally. I wish it was more flushed out though. I was more invested in Champ as the show went on because you watched as someone who only cared about themselves learned to see others as well.

Jame as Dr. Khunpol - At first I was confused about this one...I wasn't sure what his purpose was. I think if had been introduced in season 1 with his crush on Champ his character would have made more sense in season 2.
============================================
RELATIONSHIPS
Tharn x Type - A toxic relationship is still a toxic relationship. These two need some therapy. Tharn is all about getting married not understanding or appreciating his partners opinions on the matter. Not everyone wants to get married. Type on the other hand is still so far in the closet that he can't find his way out. He treats Tharn like someone who is disposable to him.

Leo x Fiat - The relationship between these two is magic. They have everything, chemistry, tragic backstory, love and drama. Leo is supportive of Fiat (to a point) but helps to guide his best friend in the right direction. Many people complain that there relationship progression seems sudden in this show and that is because it is. To get their full story please watch Don't Say No its well wroth it.

Champ x Doc - They were a cute couple. I wish they had more scenes and that Doc had been in season 1 so we could have seen some character growth between these two.
===========================================
REWATCH VALUE

To be honest before I found Don't Say No I would watch this a few times only for Leo and Fiat's relationships. However, now I avoid this like the plague.

better than the first series, but still has its own flaws

Some of these reviews are cwazy like did we watch the same show?

like yeah marriage is a recurring theme but some of y'all are making it seem like that's all tharn was talking about in every episode when, and this is true, it wasn't. it came up in the beginning and then took a back seat until the end of the show and that is perfectly okay. additionally, even though Tharn was upset that Type didn't want to get married, he never pushed it so hard (as some other reviewers claim) and in the end Type decided to do it of his own free will. so idk why everyone has their panties in a bunch about this.

i also saw someone say that Type ended up getting jealous at a picture of Tharn and a girl but he wasn't?? he literally stated that he knew Tharn wouldn't cheat on him (with her) and then that plotline just fizzled out, which i am happy about. really the reason he went and spoke with her was because he wasn't sure if Tharn would have had the guts to tell her no directly so he just did it himself. not saying it was the wisest move to do without his partner's consent, but who cares because neither of them ended up being mad about it in the end lol.

anyway, this series was leagues better than the first in my opinion, if only because it toned down some of the unnecessary miscommunication and drama between the main 2 (not saying there wasn't any of that, but it was a lot less than the first series in my humble onion). honestly even with the inclusion of fiat and leo (whose relationship i really did not care for and skipped most of their scenes together lmao) i still thought the drama levels were toned down a bit, save for Techno inserting himself into places where he most certainly doesn't belong but that's why we love him right? *rim shot* ALSO i'm actually kind of irritated that, yes, Champ really is that dense and that he Friendzoned the good doctor so many times and STILL their relationship was left up in the air at the end of it all smh.

i liked Type a lot more this time around considering he was indeed less hot headed than before. i thought he remained calm and collected a good majority of the time and you know what props to him. admittedly the whole fiat issue made me mad but i guess where else were we going to get that juicy tharntype drama(tm) that we are used to seeing by now? i will say the whole monk thing threw me for a loop but it was nice to see those aspects of Thai culture being visited in a series like this.

overall i would say this series is pretty well balanced with drama, fluff and a good sprinkling of sexy times. it's a good send off for the couple and while it did have some frustrating moments (which u should come to expect with a tharntype show) i enjoyed it a lot more than i expected. i would say it's a good show to re-watch when you just miss these two specifically and want more of them being a loving couple than being in fights (i.e. re-watch this one rather than the first series)

Good to watch

Tharn type bond is really fantastic, the main leads did it well. Other than tharn type I didn't like other pairs. That's why I will talk about tharn type characters itself. The possesiveness of them is really charming one mainly type's. They are too dependent and lovely pairs than others. Seven years of togetherness worked exactly as we expected.
In reality, relations are not that much stronger as we expect, when we came to see such a relation in dramas it makes us happy. I really got such a feelings by watching this series and wishes to watch such a pair in real life too.
Type's and tharn's characters are really different, one is arrogant and another one is smooth, one is cheesy and another one is unromantic, but they are perfect for each other.

I think reading the reviews before watching greatly impacted my enjoyment of this season Most of the reviews I read were negative, so I had really low expectations and honestly it was better than I thought it was going to be. But I do think I would have been greatly disappointed if I would have gone into this with normal expectations so I don't know how accurate my own review really is to be honest.

The biggest thing. I loved about season 1 was essentially absent in season 2. Last season, there was so much content where Tharn and Type basically just couldn't keep their hands to themselves, and I really really loved that. But they spent a lot of this season apart for one reason or another, and it didn't leave a lot of room for them to have cute moments together like I was hoping to see more of.

As far as the plot goes, I absolutely find it believable that Tharn and Type would have these kind of problems, but I don't know that it's believable it would happen after being together for 7 years. And while I enjoyed the angst those problems brought along, I don't feel like the problems were handled properly. They kind of just get glossed over when I think there should have been a bigger conversation between the two. And while there were a couple scenes I'm sure I'll want to revisit, I can't see myself rewatching the whole season ever again (unlike season 1 that I've already rewatched a few episodes of).

Despite all those complaints, I did enjoy watching this season. It was just much different than what I thought it was going to be.

Better than season 1 in a few aspects, except there’s no plot

I find it hard to review and evaluate this series, because, if in one hand it did not drive me crazy like Tharntype, on the other it’s almost clickbait to call it Tharntype 2. Yes, we get Tharn and Type together, but it’s not like they really had something to do for most of the show, specially Tharn. This show almost feels like a series made just to introduce new couples that can get their own series later on, like it happened with LeoFiat and Don’t Say No.

I think it’s VERY unlikely that Than and Type haven’t fought because of jealousy over their years between the Season 1 Special and Season 2. But the fact that both of them jump to “he’s cheating” in a heartbeat show that there’re older but not necessarily more mature. I expected this a bit more from Type, if I’m being honest. But this is a BL season 2, so it’s obvious that the one messing up would be the “good guy” from the original season (see TWM 2 and IPYTM).

It’s interesting because when Type saw Tharn kissing two of his exes it was as if he was being unreasonable for getting furious. But when Tharn see’s Type kissing and then pushing someone they’ve known had a crush on Type, it’s a huge problem and there’s definitely cheating. Yes, there were a few weird things (the pics, the pen, the kissing), but Tharn really did not trust Type not did he wait to hear the explanation. I also don’t think Tharn’s apology was sufficient. He half apologized half blamed Type for letting his guard down and getting kissed. Are we blaming the victim for being harassed and stalked now?!

I liked Khunpol and older Thanya because both had things to do and helped the TharnType plot. No was a bit same note throughout the season, but he’s the comic relief, so I didn’t expect more. Thorn is there just to get married and create the marriage conflict between TharnType and Klui serves not purpose at all. Champ unfortunately was a let down for me, since he was one of my favorites in season 1, but so dull here.

I didn’t love any of the side characters, but if I had to choose a favorite it would be Phu and Cirrus. Phu annoyed me a bit at first, since his the classic stereotype of the Disney pjs wearing BL character. I expected a bit more development on the Doc and No story, but they were cute together. LeoFiat has potential, since they got their own series, but I didn’t particularly like or root for them.

Overall, this was a WAY less problematic season, but the story was lacking essence.

PS: The special makeup for monk Type looked really bad.
